How to register for DND in India and report unwanted calls and SMS
Use your operator's official app or the TRAI DND route to block promotional calls and SMS, and learn what DND cannot stop, such as scam messages.
Do Not Disturb, or DND, is a service in India that lets you block promotional calls and SMS from registered businesses. It helps with marketing noise. It does not stop scammers, who ignore rules. Know what it can and cannot do. Menu names differ slightly on Samsung, Xiaomi, Vivo, Oppo, Realme and OnePlus phones.
Steps
- Use only official routes. Open your mobile operator's official app or website and search for DND or Do Not Disturb. You can also use TRAI's official DND app from the Play Store. Do not call numbers from forwarded messages.
- Choose what to block. The service lets you block all promotional calls and SMS or choose categories such as banking, real estate or tele-marketing. Choose full block for most people, or allow a category you want.
- Confirm the request. Submit the request and keep the confirmation message or screen. It can take some days to start working. Do not pay for DND, because registration is a free service.
- Report breaches properly. If a marketing call or SMS still comes after registration, use the complaint option in the same official app or your operator's site. Note the number, date and time before you report.
- Report scams separately. Scam calls and fake SMS are not covered by DND. Report suspicious numbers on the Sanchar Saathi portal, Chakshu facility, block them in your Phone app and, if money was lost, call 1930.
Menu names differ a little between phone makers and Android versions. If you cannot find a setting, open Settings and use the search box.
Why it matters
A busy phone full of marketing calls makes it easy to miss real ones, and to pick up a scam by habit. DND removes some of the noise so a genuine call from your bank or courier stands out. Knowing its limits stops false comfort, because a fraudster will not follow the rules.
Watch out for
- A caller offering to register you for DND for a fee is a scam.
- DND does not block fraudulent or foreign numbers.
- Do not share OTPs or personal details when someone says they are verifying your DND.
- Spoofed numbers and WhatsApp calls are not covered.

Does DND stop all SMS?
No. It targets promotional messages from registered senders. Transaction alerts, OTPs and service messages from banks and companies can still arrive, and scam messages ignore it.
Is DND registration free?
Yes. Registration should be free through official channels. If anyone asks for payment, treat it as a scam and use only your operator's app or official website.
