How to check whether a website is genuine before you trust it

A simple routine to check a website's address, look, contact details and payment options before you buy, log in or share details.

Fake websites look real. They copy logos, colours and even the page layout of banks, shops and government services. The padlock icon alone does not prove a site is honest. A short routine of checks helps you spot the usual signs of a fake before you enter a password, a card number or an Aadhaar-type detail.

Steps

  1. Read the address carefully. Look at the whole web address, not just the start. Fakes use spelling changes, extra words like secure or kyc, or an odd ending. Better still, type the address yourself or use the official app.
  2. Do not trust the padlock alone. The padlock only means the connection is encrypted. Scam sites can have it too. It does not tell you that the site belongs to the company it claims to be.
  3. Check how you reached it. If you came from an SMS, an ad or a forwarded message, be careful. Open the official site by typing the address, and compare. A genuine offer will usually be visible there too.
  4. Look for real contact and company details. Check for an address, a clear policy page and working contact details. Do not trust numbers shown only on the page. Compare with what is on your bill, card or the official app.
  5. Beware of strange payment demands. Be alert if a shop only accepts UPI to a personal name, asks for advance payment by transfer, or sells goods at a price that seems too good to be true.
  6. Pause on urgent or emotional pressure. Countdown timers, last stock and fear of penalties are pressure tactics. Close the page and check from another route. Menu names differ slightly on Samsung, Xiaomi, Vivo, Oppo, Realme and OnePlus phones, but browsers work much the same.

Menu names differ a little between phone makers and Android versions. If you cannot find a setting, open Settings and use the search box.

Why it matters

A fake site can steal your login, your card details or your money within a minute, and it often looks perfect. Because scam links arrive through SMS, WhatsApp and ads, the best defence is a habit of checking the address and the route before you type anything personal. Doing it every time, even for shops you think you know, is what makes the habit work.

Watch out for

How Safeavio helps

Safeavio's link check lets you paste or share a link before you open it, and it looks for lookalike domains, shortened links and risky patterns. It cannot prove a site is honest, and it only checks the link you give it. Your own judgement still matters.

Check it before you tap or pay

Safeavio Sentinel is a made-in-India Android app: paste a message or link, or scan a QR code, and get a plain verdict with the reasons. It helps you spot a scam; it does not promise to stop every one.

Questions

Does a padlock mean a website is safe?

No. The padlock means the connection is encrypted, not that the owner is honest. Fake sites can use it too. Check the full address and how you arrived at the page instead of relying on the icon.

How can I check a shopping site I have never heard of?

Search the name together with words like complaint or review on a separate tab, check whether it lists a real address and contact details, and start with a small order paid by a method that gives you protection.
