How to add an extra lock to your UPI and banking apps
Add a second lock to UPI and banking apps using your phone's own app lock or a trusted app lock, so unlocking the phone is not enough.
A phone lock opens everything at once. An app lock adds a second door in front of the apps that matter most, such as UPI and banking. If a stranger or a curious family member opens your phone, they still cannot open your payment apps. Some phones include this feature, and others need an app.
Steps
- Look for the built-in feature. Open Settings and search for App lock, App lock or Privacy. Many phones from Xiaomi, Vivo, Oppo, Realme and Samsung include one, though names differ. Stock Android may not have it.
- Choose the apps to lock. Pick your UPI apps, banking apps, gallery, and chat apps that hold private talks. Locking too many apps gets tiresome, so start with payments and anything private.
- Set a lock different from the phone PIN. Use a PIN or password that differs from your phone unlock code. If someone saw you unlock the phone, they should not be able to open your payment apps with the same code.
- Check each app's own lock. Open the UPI or bank app's settings and see whether it offers its own lock, fingerprint or PIN. Switch it on. Using both gives you two checks.
- Test it from the outside. Close the app, wait a minute and open it again. You should be asked for the lock first. Also test after a restart, because some locks need a setting to work then.
- Keep the recovery option safe. If you forget the app lock code, you may need a recovery method. Note it somewhere secure, and do not share it. Avoid easy codes like 1234 or birthdates.
Menu names differ a little between phone makers and Android versions. If you cannot find a setting, open Settings and use the search box.
Why it matters
Phones are unlocked in public all day, and shoulder surfers can learn your PIN by watching. An app lock gives a second barrier for money apps and private pictures. It also helps with shared phones at home, where children or relatives may tap on things without meaning harm. The extra effort is small, and the benefit lasts for as long as you keep the lock switched on.
Watch out for
- Do not download a random app lock from an unknown source.
- Do not reuse your bank PIN as an app lock.
- An app lock does not replace your phone lock.
- Choose an app lock that does not ask for needless permissions.
How Safeavio helps
Safeavio includes an App Lock with its own 4 to 6 digit PIN that you can set for chosen apps, such as UPI and gallery. It does not read what is inside those apps, and a determined attacker with the phone can still try other routes, so keep the phone lock strong too.
Check it before you tap or pay
Safeavio Sentinel is a made-in-India Android app: paste a message or link, or scan a QR code, and get a plain verdict with the reasons. It helps you spot a scam; it does not promise to stop every one.

Questions
Is a fingerprint lock better than a PIN?
A fingerprint is quick and hard to shoulder surf, but it is not secret from someone who can hold your finger to the sensor. Use a fingerprint with a strong backup PIN, and keep both private.
Does an app lock slow me down?
It adds a second of effort each time you open a locked app. For payment and private apps, most people find that a fair trade. Lock only the apps that matter so the habit lasts.
