Warning signs that someone has swapped or cloned your SIM

Learn the signs of a SIM swap, such as sudden loss of signal and strange OTPs, and what to do at once to protect your money.

In a SIM swap, a fraudster tricks a mobile company into moving your number to a new SIM that they hold. Then your OTPs go to them. You might notice only a sudden loss of signal. Knowing the signs lets you act within minutes. This guide explains them in plain words and what to do.

Steps

  1. Notice a sudden loss of signal. If your phone suddenly shows no network or emergency calls only, and nearby people still have a signal, treat it seriously. Restart the phone, then check again after a short wait.
  2. Look for strange messages. Watch for texts about a SIM change, a new device, or a request you did not make. Alerts from your bank about a new login or UPI registration you did not start are also warnings.
  3. Check calls and OTP. If you stop getting calls or OTPs, but others report that your number rings or goes elsewhere, your number may be on another SIM. Use another phone to check.
  4. Contact your mobile company at once. Use the official app, website or the number on your bill, from another phone. Tell them you suspect a SIM swap and ask them to secure your number. Menu names differ slightly on Samsung, Xiaomi, Vivo, Oppo, Realme and OnePlus phones.
  5. Tell your bank immediately. Use the number on your card or passbook. Ask them to block UPI and mobile banking until things are sorted. If any money has left, call 1930 and report at cybercrime.gov.in.
  6. Secure your accounts. From a computer or a trusted phone, change your passwords for email, Google and social apps, and turn on extra sign-in checks that do not depend on SMS, where the service offers them.

Menu names differ a little between phone makers and Android versions. If you cannot find a setting, open Settings and use the search box.

Why it matters

A swapped SIM can let a fraudster reset passwords and approve payments using your OTPs. The signs are easy to miss, because losing signal feels like an ordinary network problem. Treating an unexplained loss of signal as urgent can save your money and your accounts. Do not wait for the next day to find out.

How Safeavio helps

Safeavio can send a SIM-change alert if the SIM in your phone changes, which helps you notice SIM trouble on the device. It cannot see a swap that happens at the mobile company's end, and it cannot block your number. Only your mobile company can do that.

Check it before you tap or pay

Safeavio Sentinel is a made-in-India Android app: paste a message or link, or scan a QR code, and get a plain verdict with the reasons. It helps you spot a scam; it does not promise to stop every one.

Questions

How is a SIM swap different from losing my phone?

In a swap you still hold your phone, but your number now works on another SIM, so the signal drops. In a lost phone, you lose the device. In both cases OTPs may reach someone else, so act fast.

Can I prevent a SIM swap completely?

No one can promise that. You can lower the risk by keeping personal details private, not sharing OTPs or ID copies, and asking your mobile company what extra protection it offers for your number.
