How to run a Google Play Protect scan and keep it on
Play Protect checks apps on your Android phone for harmful behaviour. Learn how to scan now, keep it on, and what to do if it flags an app.
Google Play Protect is the built-in scanner that checks apps from the Play Store and elsewhere for harmful behaviour. Fraud apps often tell victims to turn it off. Keep it on and run a scan when something feels wrong. Menu names differ slightly on Samsung, Xiaomi, Vivo, Oppo, Realme and OnePlus phones.
Steps
- Open the Play Store. Open the Google Play Store app, tap your profile picture at the top right, and then tap Play Protect. If you cannot find it, search the Play Store or Settings for Play Protect.
- Scan now. Tap Scan. Play Protect checks your installed apps and shows the result. It may take a minute. If it finds nothing, you will see a message that your apps are fine.
- Check the settings. Tap the gear icon at the top right. Make sure Scan apps with Play Protect is on. Also turn on Improve harmful app detection if offered. Leave these on at all times.
- Act on warnings. If it flags an app, choose Uninstall rather than Keep. If it says an app is blocked or unsafe and a caller or message told you to ignore it, stop and do not continue.
- Combine with updates. Also open Settings, search for System update and Google Play system update, and install any available updates. Updated systems get new protections, so a scan is stronger on a current phone.
Menu names differ a little between phone makers and Android versions. If you cannot find a setting, open Settings and use the search box.
Why it matters
Fake bank, KYC, loan and RTO apps are shared as files on WhatsApp. Play Protect can warn you before or after they run. A caller or an app that asks you to switch it off is nearly always trying to avoid it. Keeping it on takes no effort and adds a free layer.
Watch out for
- Never turn off Play Protect because someone told you to.
- It cannot catch every new threat, so avoid unknown apps and APKs.
- Do not tap Install anyway on a warning without a very good reason.
- Phones without Google services do not have Play Protect.
How Safeavio helps
Safeavio's phone scan adds a second look: it reviews installed apps, requested permissions and risky settings such as unknown sources, and flags apps outside a store, copies of other apps and stalkerware-style apps. It does not replace Play Protect, and it does not claim to stop every attack.
Check it before you tap or pay
Safeavio Sentinel is a made-in-India Android app: paste a message or link, or scan a QR code, and get a plain verdict with the reasons. It helps you spot a scam; it does not promise to stop every one.

Questions
Is Play Protect enough on its own?
It is a good base layer but not complete. Combine it with careful installs, minimal permissions, system updates and a second check such as a permissions review.
Why would a scammer ask me to turn it off?
Because it can warn you about their fake app. A request to disable Play Protect during an install is a strong sign of fraud. Stop, uninstall and report.
