Second-Hand Car Sale Deposit Scam

A used car listed far below market asks for a token and a transport fee, then disappears. Learn how fake sellers and fake buyers cheat car owners.

A good second-hand car at a low price appears on a classifieds app, with photos and papers that look complete. The seller says he is posted in another city and asks for a token, a transport charge and 'insurance transfer' fees before delivery. The car never ships. The same scheme also works in reverse, when a fake buyer pays 'advance' with a refund trick to a seller.

How the scam works

The scammer uses real photos taken from dealer sites and a believable story: a job transfer, a sudden move abroad or an army posting. He shares a scanned registration certificate with someone else's name and says the car will be sent by a transport company. The low price creates a feeling of luck that makes buyers skip normal checks.

Payments come in layers: a token, a transport fee to a named agency, an 'insurance' and an 'NOC' charge. Each has a plausible reason and a deadline because 'another buyer is also interested'. A fake tracking page may be shown to prove the car has left, and when the buyer asks to see the car he is told it is already on the truck.

The payoff is the total of these fees from many buyers for a car that does not exist. In the reverse trick, a fake buyer sends a QR or an overpayment and asks the seller to return the difference, taking the seller's money while the original payment never arrives. The scammer keeps one phone number only for a short time and moves on to a new listing each week.

An example of what you may see

Example message (invented): 'Sir, 2019 hatchback, one owner, only 38,000 km, Rs 2.2 lakh. I am posted in another state, so I will send it by transport. Pay Rs 15,000 token now and Rs 6,500 transport and insurance transfer. Car leaves tomorrow morning, papers will be with the driver.' After payment he writes: 'Truck driver will call you, he needs Rs 3,000 diesel charge on delivery.' The driver never calls and the number stops working.

This example is written for illustration. Real messages change their wording, names and links all the time.

How Safeavio helps

Safeavio can check a tracking or payment link you paste and warn about lookalike addresses, and the scam check can mark the advance and urgency in a seller chat. QR check shows where a seller's QR goes before you scan, and Money Shield offers a verify-before-you-pay checklist. It cannot confirm that a car exists or that papers are real. Always see the car first.

Check it before you tap or pay

Safeavio Sentinel is a made-in-India Android app: paste a message or link, or scan a QR code, and get a plain verdict with the reasons. It helps you spot a scam; it does not promise to stop every one.

Questions people ask

Is it safe to pay a token before seeing the car?

No. A real seller will let you see and drive the car and sign an agreement. If a seller insists on token money first, especially to a personal account, walk away. Insist on an in-person meeting and a written agreement.

How can I verify a car's owner?

Use the official transport department service to check the registration number and owner name, and match it to the seller's ID in person. A mismatch is a strong warning. Compare the name with the seller's ID in person.

What if a buyer overpays me and asks for a refund?

Do not refund until the money is actually credited in your own bank account and cleared. A fake payment screenshot or a QR request is a common trick. Wait until your own bank app shows the credit.
