Second-Hand Car Sale Deposit Scam through an app
How it looks through an app, the red flags and what to do.
Scam apps pretend to be a bank, a loan service, a game, a government service or a "support tool", and they ask for access to SMS, contacts, the screen or accessibility. Second-Hand Car Sale Deposit Scam is one of the ways this shows up: A used car listed far below market asks for a token and a transport fee, then disappears. Learn how fake sellers and fake buyers cheat car owners.
What second-hand car sale deposit scam looks like through an app
- An app outside the official store that asks for many permissions.
- A screen-sharing or remote-control app that a caller asks you to install.
- A loan app that asks for contacts and photos.
The scammer uses real photos taken from dealer sites and a believable story: a job transfer, a sudden move abroad or an army posting. He shares a scanned registration certificate with someone else's name and says the car will be sent by a transport company. The low price creates a feeling of luck that makes buyers skip normal checks.
Red flags to check on the app
- A price far below similar cars in your area.
- The seller is always in another city and cannot show the car in person.
- Fees for transport, insurance or NOC must be paid before delivery.
- A tracking link or fake transport company confirms the shipment.
- The app does not come from the official store listing of the company.
- It asks for accessibility, screen overlay, SMS or contacts without a clear reason.
What to do
- See and test-drive the car yourself, and meet the owner in person.
- Check the registration and owner name on the official transport portal.
- Pay the seller only after the handover, with an agreement and a transfer you can verify.
- Open Settings and check Accessibility, Device admin apps and Install unknown apps for anything you do not recognise.
- Change the passwords of your bank and email from a clean device if the app had access.
- Run a phone scan (Safeavio Sentinel lists risky apps and settings).

Safeavio can check a tracking or payment link you paste and warn about lookalike addresses, and the scam check can mark the advance and urgency in a seller chat. QR check shows where a seller's QR goes before you scan, and Money Shield offers a verify-before-you-pay checklist. It cannot confirm that a car exists or that papers are real. Always see the car first.
Check it before you tap or pay
