Ration Card e-KYC and Subsidy Scam

Messages warn that your ration card will be cancelled unless you complete e-KYC through a link or app, then take Aadhaar details and OTPs.

Ration cards matter to families who rely on subsidised grain, so a warning that yours will be cancelled hits hard. Scam messages say e-KYC is pending and that free ration will stop next month. They send a link, an app file or a phone number to call. The target is the head of the family, often someone less used to smartphones, and the goal is Aadhaar details, OTPs and sometimes a small fee.

How the scam works

The scammer copies the language of local announcements about e-KYC drives and sends it to community and neighbourhood groups. The message names a state food department or says the list is being cleaned. It includes a link to a form, or a file to install, or a helpline number that connects to the scammer. The sender may use a government-looking profile picture.

The pressure uses the family's need. The message says names not updated by a certain date will be removed and ration will stop. People who depend on the card do not want to risk it, so they act fast and ask few questions. Elderly members are often told to complete it right now on their own phone, away from anyone who might doubt it.

The form collects Aadhaar numbers of all family members, mobile numbers and OTPs. The OTP can link a scammer's number to the account or approve a payment. Some versions ask for a processing fee of a few rupees. An app file, if installed, can read messages. The result is stolen identity details and sometimes money taken from a bank account that receives subsidies.

An example of what you may see

Example message (invented): 'Ration Card e-KYC pending. Cards not updated by 30th will be cancelled and free ration will stop. Update now: tap the link, enter Aadhaar of all members and the OTP. Food Department.' Signs to notice: a cancellation threat, a request for every family member's Aadhaar, and an OTP. Official e-KYC is done at the ration shop or the official state portal. When in doubt, walk to the ration shop and ask in person rather than tapping anything.

This example is written for illustration. Real messages change their wording, names and links all the time.

Red flags

What to do right now

  1. Do not use the link or call the number in the message.
  2. Ask at your local ration shop or the state food department office how e-KYC is done in your area.
  3. Check the state's official website by typing it yourself.
  4. Tell elderly relatives to show any such message to someone they trust first.
  5. Do not install any file you received in chat.

If you already paid or shared a code

  1. If you entered an OTP or Aadhaar details, tell your bank through the number on your passbook.
  2. Call 1930 if any money was taken, quickly.
  3. File a complaint at cybercrime.gov.in with screenshots of the message.
  4. Uninstall any app you installed from a message and change important passwords.

National Cyber Crime Helpline: 1930. Report online at cybercrime.gov.in. Do it fast: the sooner your bank is told, the better the chance that money can be held.

How Safeavio helps

Safeavio Sentinel lets a family member paste or share the message into the scam check, which explains why it looks risky: a threat of cancellation, requests for Aadhaar and an OTP. The link check can show lookalike addresses. A parent can set up the family so younger members help older ones check messages. It does not know your real ration record, so confirm status at the official office.

Check it before you tap or pay

Safeavio Sentinel is a made-in-India Android app: paste a message or link, or scan a QR code, and get a plain verdict with the reasons. It helps you spot a scam; it does not promise to stop every one.

Questions people ask

How do I complete ration card e-KYC safely?

Ask at your local ration shop or the state's official food department office, which will tell you the correct method. Do not follow links from chat messages or give OTPs to callers. A short visit is safer than any link.

Will free ration really stop because of one SMS?

A forwarded message is not an official notice. Real updates come through the department and the ration shop. If worried, visit the shop with your documents instead of trusting the message. Show it to a trusted person first.

Why do scammers ask for every member's Aadhaar?

More identity numbers mean more accounts or loans they can attempt, and more OTP chances. Never enter family Aadhaar numbers on a page you reached from a message. Report such messages on cybercrime.gov.in too, so others can be warned.
