PAN-Aadhaar Link Deadline Scam
A text warns that PAN will become inoperative unless you link it to Aadhaar today. The link collects your details and takes a fake penalty fee.
Linking PAN with Aadhaar is a real requirement that many people remember, which is what the scammer relies on. Messages say the deadline is today, that your PAN will stop working and that you must pay a penalty through a link. The page asks for PAN, Aadhaar and a payment. The fee goes to the scammer and the details go onto a list that is reused for further identity fraud.
How the scam works
The scammer picks a topic that has been in the news and sends the same message to a long list of numbers. The text uses terms like inoperative, penalty and linkage. It does not need to be accurate. It only needs to sound like something the reader half remembers from a notice or from a news report.
The pressure is the penalty. The page says you owe a fine and shows a payment button for a specific rupee amount. Because the amount is believable and the page looks like a form, many people pay without checking. If you hesitate, a follow up message arrives saying only a few hours remain, which pushes the fear a little higher.
The payoff is twofold. The fee is collected directly, often by UPI or a card on the fake page. The card details you type may be used again right away. Your PAN and Aadhaar numbers are then used to answer identity checks on other services. Because you willingly paid a small fee, some people feel embarrassed and delay reporting.
An example of what you may see
Example message (invented): 'Last day! PAN not linked with Aadhaar will become inoperative. Link now and pay penalty Rs 1000 at the link below. Enter PAN, Aadhaar, card details. Income Tax Helpdesk.' Note the fake last day, a flat penalty, a request for card details and a generic helpdesk signature. Real processes use the official portal, not a payment link sent by text. Genuine reminders never come with a payment link, so do not pay and check the official portal.
This example is written for illustration. Real messages change their wording, names and links all the time.
Red flags
- It says today is the last day with no source.
- It demands a penalty through a link in the message.
- It asks for card details to link two documents.
- It uses a shortened link or a lookalike domain.
- The signature is a generic helpdesk with no name.
- A follow up message pushes you with fewer hours left.
What to do right now
- Do not use the link and do not pay anything.
- Check your PAN-Aadhaar status only on the official income tax e-filing website typed by hand.
- If a fee is genuinely due, pay it only through the official portal.
- Report the number on Sanchar Saathi.
- Screenshot and delete the message.
If you already paid or shared a code
- Call 1930 and report the payment with its time and reference.
- Ask your bank, via the number printed on your card, to block the card you typed.
- File a complaint at cybercrime.gov.in.
- Monitor your credit report and alerts for new accounts using your PAN.

How Safeavio helps
Safeavio Sentinel's scam check reads the text you paste and explains the pressure it finds: a deadline, a fine and a request for card details. The link check helps you see shortened or lookalike addresses before you open them. It does not know your actual PAN-Aadhaar status or decide what you owe. For that, use the official portal. Safeavio cannot refund a payment already made.
Check it before you tap or pay
Safeavio Sentinel is a made-in-India Android app: paste a message or link, or scan a QR code, and get a plain verdict with the reasons. It helps you spot a scam; it does not promise to stop every one.

Questions people ask
How can I check if my PAN is linked?
Use the official income tax e-filing website, typing the address yourself, and follow the link status option. Do not use a link from a text, and do not pay anyone who contacts you about it.
Is a penalty ever collected by SMS link?
Official payments are made through the official portal or authorised banks, not by a card form reached through a text. If a message pushes you to a private link, treat it as suspicious. If a fee is due, only the official portal collects it.
The message knew my name. Does that make it real?
Not necessarily. Names can come from leaked lists. A real notice gives enough detail for you to check on the official portal. A scam gives only pressure and a link. Keep screenshots of the message for any complaint you decide to file.
