Fake Loan Recovery Agent Scam

Callers threaten to shame you or message your contacts unless you pay a loan, sometimes one you never took. Some are scammers with no real claim.

Calls and messages arrive from someone claiming to be a recovery agent, using harsh language and threats to tell your family, friends and employer about your debt. Some come from predatory loan apps that took data from your phone, and others come from scammers who target people who never borrowed anything. Paying under threat rarely ends it, and the demands can keep growing.

How the scam works

The scammer or an unregulated lending app gets your phone number and sometimes your contacts, usually from an app that asked for access or from a leaked list. They send messages saying that you owe money, even if the loan was small or never taken, and add penalties that grow each day. A threatening tone and a countdown push you to react.

They send edited photos, 'legal notices' and messages to your contacts that say that you are a cheat. They may use your picture from a profile or an ID in a poster. Calls come from many numbers, often late at night, and the voices are rude, so that you feel shamed and anxious, and you pay without asking for proof of what you owe.

After the first payment, new charges, penalties or 'closing fees' appear and the calls continue. The payoff for the scammer is a steady stream of payments and the data they keep from your phone. Some of the threats are empty because the debt is false or the numbers are inflated, but the shame and fear make people pay.

An example of what you may see

Example only: 'You have not paid your loan of Rs 6,000 and it is now Rs 14,500 with penalties. If you do not pay by 5 pm today, we will send your photo and a notice that you are a cheat to every contact in your phone and to your office. Pay to this UPI ID now and send the screenshot. This is your last warning.' The messages arrive from five different numbers.

This example is written for illustration. Real messages change their wording, names and links all the time.
