Fake Payment Screenshot Scam
A buyer sends an edited screenshot showing a successful UPI payment that never reached your account. You hand over goods or services for nothing.
Small sellers, tutors, tiffin services and online resellers often get a screenshot that says 'payment successful' and are asked to dispatch the goods. The picture can be edited in seconds or made in a fake payment app. It looks convincing, with a tick, a date and a reference number, but the money never arrived. Only your own bank or UPI app can confirm a credit.
How the scam works
The scammer picks a seller who runs on trust and speed, such as someone on social media or a marketplace group. They place an order, ask for a quick delivery, and say the payment is already done. They avoid paying in front of you and prefer sending a proof image instead, so you cannot watch the transaction.
The screenshot is generated with a prank or mock payment app or edited from a real receipt. It shows your name, the right amount and today's date. If you question it they say the bank is slow, that credit comes after a few hours, or they send a second picture. They may push you to ship now because they are in a hurry.
Once goods are dispatched or a service is delivered, the buyer disappears or blocks you. The scammer gains the product and you lose its value. Sometimes a second trick is added: they 'overpay' by mistake and ask you to return the extra, so you send real money in exchange for a fake one. The loss often comes back as a repeat order from the same person under a new name.
An example of what you may see
Example only: 'Bhai payment of Rs 3,200 done, check screenshot. UPI ref 4128 xxx. Please send the parcel today itself, I am travelling tomorrow. My bank app shows success, your side will update later. If you delay I will cancel the order and leave a bad review.' The sender gives a picture, but no way for you to see the credit in your own account. The sender offers a picture, a reference number and a deadline, but nothing you can check in your own account.
This example is written for illustration. Real messages change their wording, names and links all the time.

How Safeavio helps
Safeavio's Money Shield checklist includes confirming the credit in your own account before you hand over anything. If a buyer sends a link or a QR code with the order, the link check and QR check show where it leads before you open it. Safeavio cannot tell whether a screenshot picture is edited, so rely on your bank balance. It also cannot tell you whether a picture was edited.
Check it before you tap or pay
Safeavio Sentinel is a made-in-India Android app: paste a message or link, or scan a QR code, and get a plain verdict with the reasons. It helps you spot a scam; it does not promise to stop every one.

Questions people ask
How can I confirm that a UPI payment truly arrived?
Open your own bank or UPI app and look for the credit in the transaction history. A voice announcement from a shop speaker, a screenshot or a message from the buyer can be faked. Your own account entry is the proof.
What should I do when a buyer says the credit will come later?
Wait. A genuine UPI payment shows in your account within moments. If the buyer asks you to dispatch first, offer to ship after the money is visible, or ask for another payment method. A real buyer will understand.
A buyer overpaid me by mistake. Should I send back the extra?
Only after you see the original credit in your own bank or UPI app, and even then check twice. Many fake payments rely on the seller returning real money for a payment that never happened.
