Fake Payment Screenshot Scam on WhatsApp
How it looks on WhatsApp, the red flags and what to do.
WhatsApp scams arrive from numbers you do not know, from a friend whose account was taken over, or from a group you were added to without asking. Fake Payment Screenshot Scam is one of the ways this shows up: A buyer sends an edited screenshot showing a successful UPI payment that never reached your account. You hand over goods or services for nothing.
What fake payment screenshot scam looks like on WhatsApp
- A link that pretends to be a wa.me, courier or bank page.
- A message from an unknown number, often with a stock photo of a smiling person.
- A friend or relative asking for urgent money from a new number or a hacked account.
The scammer picks a seller who runs on trust and speed, such as someone on social media or a marketplace group. They place an order, ask for a quick delivery, and say the payment is already done. They avoid paying in front of you and prefer sending a proof image instead, so you cannot watch the transaction.
Red flags to check on the WhatsApp message
- The buyer sends a screenshot instead of paying in front of you.
- The money has not yet appeared in your own bank or UPI app.
- You are told that the credit will arrive later.
- The buyer rushes you to dispatch before confirmation.
- A file ending in .apk arrives; never install it.
- Someone asks for the six-digit code WhatsApp sent you by SMS.
What to do
- Check your own bank or UPI app for the credit before sending anything.
- Never treat a screenshot as proof of payment.
- Ask the buyer to pay again if your account shows no credit.
- Warn the group or family, and report the number on Sanchar Saathi if it is a scam call or message.
- Do not click links or open files. Do not send money or codes.
- Open the chat, tap the contact name and choose Block and report.
Inside WhatsApp use Block and report; for numbers that call or text you, the Sanchar Saathi portal (Chakshu facility) also takes complaints.

Safeavio's Money Shield checklist includes confirming the credit in your own account before you hand over anything. If a buyer sends a link or a QR code with the order, the link check and QR check show where it leads before you open it. Safeavio cannot tell whether a screenshot picture is edited, so rely on your bank balance. It also cannot tell you whether a picture was edited.
