Ayushman Health Card Enrolment Scam

Someone offers to make your Ayushman or free-treatment health card for a fee or an OTP. See how fake camps and agents collect money and documents.

Families hear that a government health card gives free hospital treatment, and agents use that hope. A person at a camp, a caller or a WhatsApp page offers to make the card for a fee, a photo of your Aadhaar, and an OTP. The card is either never issued or is a worthless print. Meanwhile your family's identity documents and mobile number are in a stranger's hands.

How the scam works

The agent sets up a table in a market or sends a flyer saying that enrolment closes soon. He uses the name of a known scheme and a printed card with a logo. People are asked for each family member's Aadhaar copy, a phone number and a fee for 'printing and registration', which sounds small compared with hospital costs.

He then says an OTP will arrive and that it must be read out to complete the 'eKYC'. Callers online use the same story, sometimes with a link to a lookalike registration page. The pressure is the fear of a medical emergency and the claim that people who miss the date will have to wait for a year or more.

The payoff is the fee, the identity documents and the OTP. With an Aadhaar copy and a mobile number, scammers try SIM cards, loans or bank logins. The printed card gets refused at the hospital, and the family finds out at the worst moment, when someone is already ill and has to arrange money in a hurry.

An example of what you may see

Example call (invented): 'Namaste, aapke parivar ka free ilaaj card ban raha hai, Rs 300 per member lagega. Sabka Aadhaar WhatsApp kar dijiye. Ab aapke phone par OTP aayega, woh bata dijiye to card aaj hi chhap jayega. Camp kal band ho raha hai, phir ek saal intezaar karna padega.' He repeats the same line in a gentler voice if you hesitate and offers a small discount for paying right now.

This example is written for illustration. Real messages change their wording, names and links all the time.

  2. Visit the nearest government hospital help desk or common service centre to ask.
  3. Avoid handing Aadhaar copies to unofficial camps.
  4. Ask for a receipt with the office stamp and a reference you can check.
  5. Warn neighbours who may have given documents.

How Safeavio helps

Safeavio's scam check can read a pasted message and point out the fee, the OTP request and the false deadline, and the link check can warn about a lookalike registration page. Money Shield gives a short checklist before sending any fee. It cannot tell you whether you are eligible for a scheme or whether a printed card is valid, which must be confirmed at the official hospital desk or portal.

Check it before you tap or pay

Safeavio Sentinel is a made-in-India Android app: paste a message or link, or scan a QR code, and get a plain verdict with the reasons. It helps you spot a scam; it does not promise to stop every one.

Questions people ask

Does a government health card need a fee from an agent?

Do not pay private agents for a government scheme card. Eligibility and enrolment follow official processes at designated places. Ask the hospital help desk or the official portal what is needed, and never pay cash to a person at a roadside camp.

Why does an agent want my OTP?

An OTP proves it is you. Giving it to an agent lets him act as you, for example to link your Aadhaar to another service or SIM. Never read it out to a stranger. Reading it out also lets him approve other requests in your name, so keep it private even when the person seems helpful.

What if I already gave my Aadhaar copy?

Do not panic. Lock biometrics on the official service, watch for new SIMs or loans in your name, and report any misuse. Next time, hand documents only at official offices. Also keep a list of what you handed over, and to whom.
