Pension Life Certificate Call Scam
A caller says your pension will stop unless you submit a life certificate now and asks for an OTP. See how seniors are targeted and how to stay safe.
Pensioners must prove every year that they are alive, and scammers use that yearly routine. A caller or SMS says the life certificate is overdue and the pension will stop this month. To 'update' it, the retired person is asked to share an OTP, install a helper app, or pay a small fee. The real submission needs none of these, yet the fear of losing a monthly income makes many people comply.
How the scam works
The scammer often knows the person is a pensioner from leaked lists, a bank branch visit or a neighbour. The call sounds calm and official, naming the pension office or the bank, and quotes the correct month when certificates are normally due. This detail makes it believable to someone who has submitted the paper before.
Pressure comes from the stakes: 'no certificate, no pension from next month'. The caller guides the senior to read out an OTP, tap a link, or install an app for a video verification. He stays on the line and speaks slowly so the person has no time to ask a family member or visit the branch.
The payoff is access to the pension account. With an OTP or screen-sharing app, the scammer moves the savings, blocks the alert messages, and may take a loan. Because the account holds a lifetime of savings and the pension is the only income, the harm is far bigger than the amount of one month. Families often learn about the loss only when the next pension does not arrive, which is far too late.
An example of what you may see
Example call (invented): 'Namaste uncle, main pension department se bol raha hoon. Aapka jeevan praman patra pending hai, agle mahine se pension band ho jayegi. Abhi aapke phone par ek OTP aaya hoga, woh bata dijiye taaki hum aapka certificate online jama kar dein.' He repeats the request kindly three times and adds: 'Beta ko mat batana, abhi turant ho jayega, bas OTP bata dijiye uncle.' Then he asks the senior to keep the phone line open.
This example is written for illustration. Real messages change their wording, names and links all the time.
Red flags
- The caller asks for an OTP to submit a certificate.
- A helper app or screen-sharing tool is needed for the 'update'.
- You are told the pension stops this month, with no written notice.
- He asks you to stay on the line and not tell family.
- A fee is demanded to 'process' the life certificate.
- The caller cannot name your branch or the office on paper.
What to do right now
- Hang up and do not read out any OTP or code.
- Tell a family member before doing anything else.
- Visit your bank branch or the pension office, or use the official channel you used last year.
- Check your pension status only from the official portal or the bank's own app.
- Save the number and report it to Sanchar Saathi using Chakshu.
If you already paid or shared a code
- If you shared an OTP or installed an app, call 1930 immediately and report at cybercrime.gov.in.
- Ask your bank, on the number printed on your passbook, to block net banking and UPI.
- Uninstall the app, or ask a family member to help reset the phone.
- Visit the branch in person to confirm pension credit and ask for a statement.

How Safeavio helps
Family features can help here: a child or relative can use the family alerts and the code word idea from Money Shield so that any request about money is checked at home first. Safeavio can also review a message or link you paste and warns about urgency and OTP asks. It cannot hear a phone call, so the habit of hanging up and calling the branch yourself matters most.
Check it before you tap or pay
Safeavio Sentinel is a made-in-India Android app: paste a message or link, or scan a QR code, and get a plain verdict with the reasons. It helps you spot a scam; it does not promise to stop every one.

Questions people ask
Does a life certificate ever need an OTP?
No OTP has to be given to a caller to submit a life certificate. Genuine submission is done at the bank, a designated centre or the official channel by the pensioner. If someone asks for an OTP over the phone, stop the call.
Will my pension really stop if I ignore the call?
A phone call is not an official notice. Check at your branch or pension office using the number on your records. They can tell you the real status without any payment or app. You can always check without paying anything.
How can a family protect an elderly parent?
Agree on a simple rule: no OTP, no app install and no payment without telling one named family member first. Keep a written list of the official branch contacts near the phone for easy checking.
