Smart Lock on Android: what it unlocks and how to use it safely
Smart Lock keeps your Android phone unlocked at home, with a watch or in your pocket. Learn how it works, its risks and which settings to avoid.
Smart Lock, also shown as Extend Unlock or Trusted places, keeps your phone unlocked in situations you mark as safe. It saves taps but also lets anyone who is nearby open the phone. Use it knowingly and avoid the loose options. Menu names differ slightly on Samsung, Xiaomi, Vivo, Oppo, Realme and OnePlus phones.
Steps
- Open the Smart Lock page. Open Settings, then Security, then Advanced settings, then Smart Lock, or search Settings for Smart Lock. You must enter your PIN, pattern or password first. If the option is missing, your phone does not support it.
- Review each trusted item. Look for On-body detection, Trusted places and Trusted devices. Each one keeps the phone unlocked in a certain situation. Check which ones are currently on.
- Remove Trusted places. Trusted places based on your home location can leave the phone open for anyone in the house or a larger area around it. Remove them if you share your space or live in a crowded place.
- Be careful with Trusted devices. A Bluetooth device such as a watch or car can keep the phone open while connected. Remove old or shared devices and never add a device that others can use.
- Turn off On-body detection if unsure. On-body detection can keep the phone unlocked after you hand it to someone while moving. If that worries you, switch it off and use fingerprint or PIN each time.
Menu names differ a little between phone makers and Android versions. If you cannot find a setting, open Settings and use the search box.
Why it matters
A lock that is open at home is not a lock if a guest, relative or house worker picks up the phone. Thieves who grab a phone from your hand while it is on-body unlocked can also keep it open. The few seconds saved are rarely worth the risk to your payments and chats.
Watch out for
- Smart Lock can keep the phone open for a long time without asking for a PIN.
- A shared home Wi-Fi or Bluetooth device can be treated as trusted by mistake.
- If someone knows your habits they can use them to get access.
- Check the setting again after phone updates or after you reset the phone.
How Safeavio helps
Safeavio's phone scan checks for a missing screen lock and risky settings, and anti-theft features let you locate, ring and lock the phone from the owner's portal. Guard my phone adds a loud siren if the phone is picked up and carried away. These are warnings and tools, not a guarantee.
Check it before you tap or pay
Safeavio Sentinel is a made-in-India Android app: paste a message or link, or scan a QR code, and get a plain verdict with the reasons. It helps you spot a scam; it does not promise to stop every one.

Questions
Is Smart Lock unsafe?
It is a trade between ease and safety. On-body and trusted places carry the most risk. Using it only with a personal watch and a strong backup lock is a more careful choice.
Why is Smart Lock missing on my phone?
Some makers rename it, such as Extend Unlock, or do not include it. Search Settings for Smart Lock or Trusted. It is not a problem if it is missing.
