How to control Auto-start and background launch apps on Android

Many Android phones let apps start by themselves after a restart. Find the Auto-start list, switch off apps that do not need it and save battery.

Some phone makers include an Auto-start or App launch list that decides which apps may start on their own when the phone turns on. Unwanted apps use it to keep running, show ads or send data. Trimming it is easy. Menu names differ slightly on Samsung, Xiaomi, Vivo, Oppo, Realme and OnePlus phones.

Steps

  1. Find the Auto-start page. Open Settings and search for Auto-start, App launch or Startup manager. On Xiaomi it is often under Apps, then Permissions. On Vivo, Oppo, Realme and OnePlus it may sit under Battery or Apps.
  2. Read what is allowed. The list shows each app with a toggle. On is allowed to start by itself. Chat and banking apps may need this on. Wallpaper, cleaner, loan, coupon and game apps usually do not.
  3. Switch off unneeded apps. Turn off the toggle for apps that do not need to run when you are not using them. They still open normally when you tap them, so you lose nothing important.
  4. Keep the apps you rely on. Leave your messaging, alarm, calendar and anti-theft apps on, or you may miss alerts. If you are unsure, leave it on and check the battery usage of that app later.
  5. Do it again after installs. Newly installed apps are sometimes allowed by default. After adding apps, open the same list again. Remove any app you no longer use, because a missing app cannot auto-start at all.

Menu names differ a little between phone makers and Android versions. If you cannot find a setting, open Settings and use the search box.

Why it matters

Apps that start by themselves can keep collecting data, load ads and wake up the phone at night. Spy and fraud apps often want this exact freedom, and a restart is a chance for them to come back. Keeping the Auto-start list short saves battery and gives unknown apps less to work with.

Watch out for

How Safeavio helps

Safeavio's phone scan reviews installed apps and risky settings, which helps you decide which apps to remove or trim. Anti-theft features like location, ring and SIM-change alerts depend on the app being allowed to run, so keep Safeavio allowed if you use them. Setup is explained in plain words in the app.

Check it before you tap or pay

Safeavio Sentinel is a made-in-India Android app: paste a message or link, or scan a QR code, and get a plain verdict with the reasons. It helps you spot a scam; it does not promise to stop every one.

Questions

Does turning off Auto-start stop an app from working?

No. The app still opens when you tap it. It just will not start by itself after a restart or in the background. If you miss alerts from it, turn it on again.

Why can I not find Auto-start on my phone?

Pure Android and some makers do not have it. Search Settings for background activity or battery instead. The setting is named differently across brands and Android versions.
