How to hide notification content on the Android lock screen

Stop OTPs, bank alerts and chat previews from showing on your locked Android screen so a stranger standing nearby cannot read or copy them.

Anyone who can see your locked phone can read the notifications on it. That can include an OTP, a bank balance alert or a private chat. A short setting change hides the content until you unlock the phone. Menu names differ slightly on Samsung, Xiaomi, Vivo, Oppo, Realme and OnePlus phones.

Steps

  1. Find the lock screen notification setting. Open Settings, then Notifications, and look for Notifications on lock screen or Lock screen. On some phones it is under Display or Security. You can also search Settings for lock screen notifications.
  2. Choose to hide sensitive content. Select Hide sensitive content, Don't show sensitive content or Show content only when unlocked. This keeps the app name visible but hides the message text and numbers.
  3. Or turn off lock screen notifications. If you want more privacy, choose Don't show notifications at all. You will see them when you unlock the phone or open the notification shade after unlocking.
  4. Hide for chosen apps. Some phones let you set this per app. Open the app notification settings and look for Lock screen or Show on lock screen. Do this for your bank, UPI, email and chat apps.
  5. Test it. Lock the phone and ask a friend to send you a message. Check that the lock screen does not show the text. Adjust the setting until only the app name appears.

Menu names differ a little between phone makers and Android versions. If you cannot find a setting, open Settings and use the search box.

Why it matters

OTPs and alerts are often visible for a few seconds on a locked screen. A person sitting next to you, a house helper or a thief can read an OTP and use it, especially if they already know your card details. Hiding the content is one of the simplest and most useful privacy settings.

Watch out for

How Safeavio helps

Safeavio's Scam check works on text you paste or share, such as an SMS or WhatsApp message, and explains the reasons in plain words. It does not read your messages on its own and it cannot change your notification settings. Hiding sensitive content on the lock screen stays your own quick setting.

Check it before you tap or pay

Safeavio Sentinel is a made-in-India Android app: paste a message or link, or scan a QR code, and get a plain verdict with the reasons. It helps you spot a scam; it does not promise to stop every one.

Questions

Will I still get notified if I hide the content?

Yes. You still see that a message arrived and from which app. Only the private text is hidden until you unlock the phone.

Does this stop OTP auto-fill?

No. Auto-fill is a separate feature. Hiding lock screen content only changes what is shown while the phone is locked.
