How to sell or give away your Android phone safely
Back up, sign out, remove your SIM and accounts, encrypt and reset your Android phone so the next owner cannot see your data or lock you out.
Phones keep photos, chats, bank apps and saved logins. Selling or handing one to a relative, repair shop or exchange counter without cleaning it can expose all of it. These steps leave the phone clean and make sure you are not tied to it. Menu names differ slightly on Samsung, Xiaomi, Vivo, Oppo, Realme and OnePlus phones.
Steps
- Back up and move your data. Make a backup of photos, contacts and chats, then check them on your new phone before you erase this one. Also move your authenticator app and note any backup codes you need.
- Log out of important accounts. Log out of banking and UPI apps, WhatsApp, Google and any phone maker account. Remove the phone from lists of devices in those accounts. Turn off Find My Device last, after you remove your Google account.
- Remove SIM and memory card. Take out your SIM and any memory card. Keep or destroy them as you prefer. Also note that eSIM profiles need to be removed in Settings under Network and internet, SIMs.
- Factory reset the phone. Use Settings, System, Reset options, Erase all data. Confirm and wait until the phone restarts to the welcome screen. Do not set it up. Some people repeat the reset once for extra care.
- Hand it over and watch the deal. Do the exchange in a public place and accept only a payment you have checked in your own app, not a screenshot. After the sale, change passwords for key accounts as a precaution.
Menu names differ a little between phone makers and Android versions. If you cannot find a setting, open Settings and use the search box.
Why it matters
Deleted photos and chats can be recovered from a phone that was only wiped lightly or not at all. A buyer, shop worker or thief could see bank apps, contacts and saved passwords. A proper wipe also stops you from being linked to a phone used for fraud, which can cause trouble for the old owner.
Watch out for
- Do not hand over a phone that is still signed in to your Google account.
- A buyer who offers a payment screenshot or asks you to click a link to receive money is a scammer.
- Never give your UPI PIN to receive payment.
- Keep the box, bill and IMEI details for your own records.
How Safeavio helps
Safeavio's Privacy tools include data export and delete and secure delete, which help you take your information out and remove it properly. Money Shield's Verify before you pay checklist helps when a buyer pushes a payment trick. Remove Safeavio and its portal link before you hand the phone over.
Check it before you tap or pay
Safeavio Sentinel is a made-in-India Android app: paste a message or link, or scan a QR code, and get a plain verdict with the reasons. It helps you spot a scam; it does not promise to stop every one.

Questions
Is a factory reset enough before selling?
For most people yes, if you first remove your accounts and the phone is encrypted, which is the default on modern Android. Check that it shows the welcome screen before you hand it over.
What if I sell a phone with a lock that I cannot remove?
The buyer will be stuck. Remove your Google account first, then reset. If you forgot the lock, recover it through your account before handing the phone over.
