UPI Lite
UPI Lite is a small-value wallet inside your UPI app for quick payments without a PIN, with a low balance and per-payment limit.
UPI Lite: UPI Lite is an on-device balance in some UPI apps that you load from your bank account. Small payments from it go through without a PIN each time. The balance and per-payment amounts are capped, so a mistake is limited to small sums.
People use UPI Lite for tiny everyday spends like tea, auto fares and metro tickets, where entering a PIN every time is slow. You add a small amount to the Lite balance and spend from it. Because no PIN is asked for each payment, the real protection is the low balance. It is meant for convenience, so the amounts involved are deliberately small and capped by the system.
Keep that balance small. If your phone is stolen and unlocked, or someone gets to hold it for a minute, a no-PIN payment is easy. Also remember scammers may try to push you to "activate" features. Turn it on only inside your own official app and only if you want it. You can switch it off anytime. Check the Lite balance now and then, as you would check coins in a purse.
Tips
- Keep only a small amount in UPI Lite, enough for a day or two.
- Use a strong screen lock so a borrowed phone cannot spend freely.
- Turn it off in the app if you rarely use it.
