TRAI: TRAI is the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India. It sets rules for telecom operators and protects consumers on matters like tariffs, quality and unwanted commercial calls and messages. It regulates companies, and it does not call individuals about their numbers being blocked.
A common scam call says, "This is TRAI. Your number will be disconnected in two hours because of illegal activity." Often an automated voice asks you to press 1, and then a person claims to be from police or a cyber cell. Their aim is to scare you into paying or sharing documents, so they keep you on the line.
Telecom regulators and operators do not disconnect numbers through such calls. If you are worried, hang up and check with your own operator through its official app or the number on your bill. You can also check connections on Sanchar Saathi. Do not press any key, do not share Aadhaar details and do not stay on the call. Genuine officials never conduct investigations or collect payments through unknown phone calls.
Tips
- Hang up on any call claiming that TRAI will disconnect your number.
- Check your connection status in your operator's official app.
