SIM swap fraud
SIM swap fraud is when criminals get a duplicate SIM for your number so your OTPs and calls reach them instead of you.
SIM swap fraud: SIM swap fraud occurs when a criminal gets your mobile number moved to a new SIM that they control, by tricking your operator or you. Then your calls and OTP messages reach them, and they can reset passwords and approve bank transactions.
A sudden loss of mobile signal, with no calls or SMS when others around you have service, can be the first sign. Meanwhile OTPs for logins and payments go to the fraudster. They may have collected your details beforehand through phishing, fake KYC calls or a leaked Aadhaar copy, and then asked the operator for a replacement SIM. Such details are easier for criminals to collect than most people assume, which is why guarding them matters.
If your phone suddenly says no service, act at once: contact your operator through its official app or a store, check your bank accounts for activity, and call 1930 if money has gone. Never share the OTP or code that an operator message sends for SIM change. The Safeavio SIM-change alert can warn you if the SIM in your phone changes.
Tips
- If your phone suddenly loses signal for no reason, check your bank accounts straight away.
- Never share an SIM change or replacement code with anyone.
- Keep your personal details and Aadhaar copies private.
