Account freeze
Account freeze is when a bank holds or blocks your account, often after a fraud report. Know what it means and how to ask your bank to clear it.
Account freeze: An account freeze or hold is when a bank blocks some or all transactions on an account. It can happen after a fraud complaint, a police request, suspicious activity or incomplete KYC. The bank must usually tell you why and what to do next.
There are two sides. If you are a victim, a freeze on the receiving account can stop stolen money from moving, which is why quick reporting matters. If your own account is frozen, it may be because money from a fraud passed through it, perhaps without your knowledge, such as in a mule account case. A freeze can also come from outdated KYC, which is usually fixed by submitting documents.
Do not panic or search online for "unfreeze" helpers; those are often scams. Visit your branch or use the bank's official app to ask what the reason is, and bring your ID and records. If your account was misused, explain calmly and cooperate with the bank and police. Keep copies of every complaint and letter. Banks follow set procedures here, so the facts and your records matter more than arguments.
Tips
- Ask your own bank through the official app or branch why the account is frozen.
- Keep records of all complaints and letters.
- Ignore online helpers who offer to unfreeze an account for a fee.
