Aadhaar masked copy
Aadhaar masked copy is a version of your Aadhaar that hides the first eight digits, so you can share it without exposing the full number.
Aadhaar masked copy: A masked Aadhaar is a download of your Aadhaar where the first eight digits of the twelve-digit number are hidden, showing only the last four. It is made for sharing as ID proof, so that people who do not need your full number do not receive it.
Hotels, gyms, landlords, shops and some offices ask for a photocopy of your Aadhaar. A full copy can be misused for fake KYC, loan applications or SIM fraud. A masked version still proves who you are but keeps the full number private. You can download one from the official Aadhaar service using your mobile OTP. It is a simple habit that costs nothing.
Be careful about where you send even a masked copy. Add a note on photocopies, such as "for hotel check-in, date, name", so it cannot easily be reused elsewhere. Do not post images of your Aadhaar on social media or in open chat groups. If someone insists on a full copy without a good reason, ask why. Ask what they will do with it and how long they will keep it.
Tips
- Download and give a masked Aadhaar when a full number is not required.
- Write the purpose and date across any photocopy you hand out.
- Never post Aadhaar images on social media or public groups.
