Fake Passport Seva calls and apps

Callers and lookalike sites using Passport Seva's name for tatkal slots, video-call cases and verification payments. Learn the script.

Passport Seva is the Ministry of External Affairs service for applying, renewing and tracking Indian passports through passport centres. Because many people use it, scammers pretend to be Passport Seva on phone calls, in apps and on WhatsApp. This page lists the lies they usually tell and how to check before you act.

Lines used in fake Passport Seva calls and apps

Caller says your passport was found in a foreign crime and asks you to cooperate by video
Fake agent promises a tatkal appointment slot for an extra payment by UPI
Caller asks for your file number and OTP to speed up police verification
Lookalike website collects fees and your documents for a passport application

How to verify it yourself

Book and track passport work only on the official Passport Seva website, which you should type by hand. The application fee is paid there, and a receipt shows in your account. Appointments are given on the portal, and money for a tatkal slot is not collected by a personal UPI number. Police verification is handled by the local police unit, and no officer asks for a bribe through a call. Imitation sites charge extra, so check the address closely.

Quick checklist

Do not tap links or call numbers inside the message.
Open the official app, or type the official website yourself, and look for the same notice.
Never share an OTP, PIN, CVV or password with anyone, including "staff".
If money moved, call 1930 and your bank at once.

A caller says they are from Passport Seva. Is it real?

Treat it as unverified. Hang up and contact Passport Seva through its official app or the number printed on your card, bill or official website. Never install an app or share an OTP because a caller asked.

Can Passport Seva ask me to install an app on a call?

Be very careful. Scammers use screen-sharing and fake apps to watch your screen and read OTPs. Install apps only from the official store listing that you find yourself, never from a link or a caller.
