My SIM changed or lost signal: check for a SIM swap

A SIM swap means someone moved your number to their SIM, usually to catch your OTPs. If your phone suddenly shows no service for a long time, treat it as serious until you know why.

Do these first

  1. Use another phone to call your mobile operator on the number printed on your bill or in its official app. Ask if a SIM replacement or port request was made on your number.
  2. Ask the operator to block the new SIM and give you a new one in person, with your ID.
  3. Call your bank, from another phone, and ask them to pause UPI and net banking until your number is safe.
  4. Change passwords for email, banking and social accounts, and move two-step verification to an authenticator app instead of SMS.

Then do these

  1. Check your bank, UPI and email for sign-ins and payments you did not make.
  2. Add a PIN to your SIM and to your operator account if the operator offers it.
  3. Tell family that they should not trust messages from your number until you confirm.
  4. Note the time that service dropped; it helps the operator and the police.

What not to do

Where to report

Report at cybercrime.gov.in and call 1930 if money moved. Suspicious SIM behaviour can also be reported on the Sanchar Saathi portal.

How Safeavio Sentinel can help

Questions people ask

Can Safeavio detect a SIM swap at the operator?

Not directly. If someone moves your number to another SIM, this phone keeps its SIM and loses service. Safeavio can only hint at that, so check with your operator.

Does Safeavio read my phone number?

No. It keeps only a scrambled fingerprint of the SIM details on the phone to notice a change.

Check it before you tap or pay
