Do these first
- Lock the device from the portal or Find My Device if it is on. Mark it lost and put a message with an alternate number.
- Call your mobile operator from another phone and ask them to block the SIM, then get a new one with the same number.
- Call your bank and pause UPI and cards linked to the phone.
- Change the passwords for email, Google or Apple account, social media and banking from another device, and sign out of all sessions.
Then do these
- File a police complaint with the device model, colour and IMEI. The IMEI is printed on the box and the bill, and a phone shows it when you dial *#06#; note it down now, before anything happens.
- Report the loss on the Sanchar Saathi portal so the operator can block the handset.
- Remote wipe only if you are sure you will not recover it, and know that wiping needs the device to be online.
- For a laptop, tell your office if it holds work data and ask them to revoke tokens.
What not to do
- Do not wait for the thief to call you.
- Do not meet someone alone to get the device back.
- Do not share your remaining device's PIN or OTPs.
Where to report
Police complaint, then Sanchar Saathi for blocking the handset. If money moved, call 1930 and report at cybercrime.gov.in.
How Safeavio Sentinel can help
- Anti-theft: locate, ring, lock and lost-mode message from the owner's portal, SIM-change alert and recovery information.
- Guard my phone: a loud siren if the phone is picked up and carried away while it is armed.
- Safeavio cannot stop a thief who switches the phone off; a strong lock and encryption are your last line.
Questions people ask
Can I wipe a stolen phone?
Yes, from the device owner's account or portal when the phone is online. If the thief keeps it offline, the wipe happens only when it reconnects. A strong screen lock and encryption protect it until then.
Is a lock screen enough on a laptop?
A lock screen alone is not enough, because a disk can be removed and read elsewhere. Turn on full-disk encryption (BitLocker, FileVault or LUKS) before anything happens.
