Salary Account Upgrade Scam on WhatsApp
How it looks on WhatsApp, the red flags and what to do.
WhatsApp scams arrive from numbers you do not know, from a friend whose account was taken over, or from a group you were added to without asking. Salary Account Upgrade Scam is one of the ways this shows up: A caller offers a free upgrade of your salary account with a premium card and benefits, and asks for an OTP to approve it.
What salary account upgrade scam looks like on WhatsApp
- A PDF, APK or image that must be opened to "see the details".
- A link that pretends to be a wa.me, courier or bank page.
- A message from an unknown number, often with a stock photo of a smiling person.
The scammer picks salary account holders by using lists of employer names or by guessing. They call in working hours and mention the benefits in a sales tone: airport lounge access, cashback, free insurance and a higher withdrawal limit. They do not name your actual salary account number, but make it sound as if they can see your details.
Red flags to check on the WhatsApp message
- An unexpected call offers a free premium upgrade.
- A code is requested to accept 'terms and conditions'.
- You are asked to confirm account details by phone.
- The offer ends today.
- A file ending in .apk arrives; never install it.
- Someone asks for the six-digit code WhatsApp sent you by SMS.
What to do
- End the call without sharing any code or account detail.
- Check any upgrade offers inside the bank's official app or at the branch.
- Call the bank on the number on your card or passbook if in doubt.
- Warn the group or family, and report the number on Sanchar Saathi if it is a scam call or message.
- Do not click links or open files. Do not send money or codes.
- Open the chat, tap the contact name and choose Block and report.

If money or a code is already gone
- Call your bank on the number on your card and block net banking, cards and UPI.
- Call 1930 and give the amount, time and call details.
- Report at https://cybercrime.gov.in with the call log and statements.
- Ask the bank to review the transactions and to flag the account for monitoring.
