Salary Account Upgrade Scam by SMS

How it looks by SMS, the red flags and what to do.

SMS scams lean on short, urgent lines and a shortened link. The message looks official because the sender name (header) is shaped to resemble a real organisation. Salary Account Upgrade Scam is one of the ways this shows up: A caller offers a free upgrade of your salary account with a premium card and benefits, and asks for an OTP to approve it.

What salary account upgrade scam looks like by SMS

The scammer picks salary account holders by using lists of employer names or by guessing. They call in working hours and mention the benefits in a sales tone: airport lounge access, cashback, free insurance and a higher withdrawal limit. They do not name your actual salary account number, but make it sound as if they can see your details.

Red flags to check on the text message

What to do

  1. End the call without sharing any code or account detail.
  2. Check any upgrade offers inside the bank's official app or at the branch.
  3. Call the bank on the number on your card or passbook if in doubt.
  4. Do not reply, do not tap the link and do not call the number in the message.
  5. Open the official app or type the official website yourself to see if there is any real notice.
  6. Paste the text into a scam checker (Safeavio Sentinel can check it) before you do anything else.

You can report suspicious SMS and calls on the Sanchar Saathi portal (Chakshu facility) of the Department of Telecommunications.

If money or a code is already gone

  1. Call your bank on the number on your card and block net banking, cards and UPI.
  2. Call 1930 and give the amount, time and call details.
  3. Report at https://cybercrime.gov.in with the call log and statements.
  4. Ask the bank to review the transactions and to flag the account for monitoring.

National Cyber Crime Helpline: 1930; report at cybercrime.gov.in.

Safeavio's Money Shield checklist reminds you that no genuine offer needs your OTP, and the scam check can review any follow-up message or link you paste, showing the reasons it looks risky. It does not block calls by itself, so end the call and confirm any upgrade through the bank's official app or branch. Ask your bank. Check in the official app.
