WhatsApp is private and fast, which scammers like: a "wrong number" chat can turn into a task, an investment tip or a payment request within minutes. Medical Visa and Hospital Deposit Scam is one of the ways this shows up: A broker promises fast hospital admission or a medical visa and asks for a big deposit that never comes back. See how families in crisis are targeted.
What medical visa and hospital deposit scam looks like on WhatsApp
- A link that pretends to be a wa.me, courier or bank page.
- A message from an unknown number, often with a stock photo of a smiling person.
- A friend or relative asking for urgent money from a new number or a hacked account.
The coordinator responds to posts in patient support groups or to ads for treatment help. He sends a detailed plan with the name of a well-known hospital, photos of smiling patients and an estimate. He sounds caring and says the first call with a doctor will be arranged after a small registration fee. The family feels relief at having found someone who takes charge.
Red flags to check on the WhatsApp message
- A broker who handles bed booking and visa on his own.
- Deposits demanded to a personal account or by UPI.
- A guaranteed date for surgery or visa.
- A letter with no reference number, address or contact for the hospital.
- Someone asks for the six-digit code WhatsApp sent you by SMS.
- A new number says it is someone you know and asks for money; call the real person on the old number first.
What to do
- Contact the hospital's patient office using details from its official website typed by hand.
- Ask the hospital to confirm any booking and deposit in writing before paying.
- Pay deposits only to the hospital's official account, never to an individual.
- Do not click links or open files. Do not send money or codes.
- Open the chat, tap the contact name and choose Block and report.
- If it was a "friend", call them on the number you already have and ask.
Inside WhatsApp use Block and report; for numbers that call or text you, the Sanchar Saathi portal (Chakshu facility) also takes complaints.
If money or a code is already gone
- Call 1930 and report at cybercrime.gov.in with receipts and chats.
- Contact your bank on the number printed on your card to ask about holding the transfer.
- Tell the hospital about the fake booking so they can confirm and warn others.
- File a written complaint at the police station and keep the number of the case.
National Cyber Crime Helpline: 1930; report at cybercrime.gov.in.
Safeavio's scam check can read a broker's message and mark the guarantee, the deposit demand and the expiring discount. The link check can warn if a booking or visa page uses a lookalike address. Money Shield's checklist can be shared with a family member before a large transfer. Safeavio cannot confirm bed availability or visa status, so the hospital and the embassy remain the only sources.
