On Instagram, Facebook or YouTube the scam can be an ad, a direct message, a giveaway or a "trader" who shows profits. Fake Instagram Account Recovery and Verification Badge Offer is one of the ways this shows up: A DM says your page broke a rule and offers a blue tick or recovery help via a link. The link steals your login or money.

What fake instagram account recovery and verification badge offer looks like on social media

• A giveaway that asks you to pay a small fee or share a code.
• An ad with a celebrity face and a payment link.
• A "friend" account that is a copy of someone you know.

The scammer sends a DM or an email with the platform's logo and an official-sounding title such as 'Policy Team'. It says your page will be removed unless you appeal at once through a form. The form looks like the real login page, and any username and password you type go straight to the scammer. Some versions ask for a code from your authenticator or SMS as part of the 'appeal'.

Red flags to check on the social media message

• A DM or email says your account will be disabled in a day unless you act.
• The appeal link asks you to log in and enter a code.
• A badge or verification is offered for a fee by a stranger.
• A recovery agent asks for payment before showing any proof.
• The profile is new, or the followers are bots.
• The offer is far better than any normal shop or job.

What to do

1. Do not tap the link; open the platform's app yourself and check Account Status or support in settings.
2. Never type your login or a code on a page reached from a DM.
3. If you already logged in on that page, change your password at once and log out of other devices.
4. If you paid, call 1930 and keep screenshots of the chat and the payment.
5. Do not pay, share codes or move to another app.
6. Check the account: when it was created, who follows it, and whether the real brand links to it from its own website.

Use Report on the profile, post or ad. If money was lost, call 1930 and report at cybercrime.gov.in.

If money or a code is already gone

1. If you paid, call 1930 and report at cybercrime.gov.in with the payment details.
2. Tell your bank through its official app if card details were shared.
3. Use the platform's official recovery steps and warn your followers about any messages sent from your account.
4. Change the password of the email linked to the account.
