Fake Instagram Account Recovery and Verification Badge Offer

A DM says your page broke a rule and offers a blue tick or recovery help via a link. The link steals your login or money.

You run a small page or simply use Instagram every day, and a message says your account will be disabled in 24 hours for a copyright violation. Another offers a blue tick for a small fee. A third says a 'recovery expert' can restore a hacked account. Each one points to a link or a payment. The sender is not the platform, and the page you reach is built to copy your login or to charge you for nothing.

How the scam works

The scammer sends a DM or an email with the platform's logo and an official-sounding title such as 'Policy Team'. It says your page will be removed unless you appeal at once through a form. The form looks like the real login page, and any username and password you type go straight to the scammer. Some versions ask for a code from your authenticator or SMS as part of the 'appeal'.

The pressure is the clock and your hard work. For people with followers or a small business, the idea of losing the page is distressing. In the badge version, a person offers verification for a fee after you answer a short form. In the recovery version, someone replies under a post about a hacked account and offers to restore it for a payment, taking the fee and often hacking the account again.

The payoff is the account itself, which can be sold, used to message followers with scams, or held for ransom. Fees for the 'badge' or 'recovery' are lost. Because the scammer has your email and phone through the form, further phishing follows. Victims may lose their business page, years of photos and customers, and then see their account used to defraud their own followers.

An example of what you may see

Example DM (invented): 'Policy Team notice: Your account has violated copyright rules and will be permanently disabled in 24 hours. To file an appeal, log in here and confirm the code sent to you. Failure to respond will lead to deletion.' Another message under your post: 'Hacked? I can restore any account in an hour, pay Rs 3,000 first and I will send the proof.' The link looks like a long string with the platform's name somewhere inside it.

This example is written for illustration. Real messages change their wording, names and links all the time.

Red flags

What to do right now

  1. Do not tap the link; open the platform's app yourself and check Account Status or support in settings.
  2. Never type your login or a code on a page reached from a DM.
  3. If you already logged in on that page, change your password at once and log out of other devices.
  4. Turn on two-step login and review linked emails and phone numbers.
  5. Report the message to the platform and block the sender.

If you already paid or shared a code

  1. If you paid, call 1930 and report at cybercrime.gov.in with the payment details.
  2. Tell your bank through its official app if card details were shared.
  3. Use the platform's official recovery steps and warn your followers about any messages sent from your account.
  4. Change the password of the email linked to the account.

Questions people ask

Does the platform send warnings through DMs?

Genuine notices appear inside the app's account status and support area. A DM from an unknown page with a login link is a common trick. You can also check the 'emails from the platform' list in your account settings to see whether a message is real.

Can anyone sell me a blue tick?

Verification is handled by the platform through its own process. A stranger offering it for a fee is not an authorised seller. Verification is decided by the platform after reviewing the account, and fees paid to strangers do not buy it.

My account was hacked. Who can help?

Use the platform's official recovery steps and your registered email. Avoid anyone who offers a quick recovery for a payment, because they may take the money or compromise the account again. Also warn your followers if any messages were sent from your page.
