Fake Online Store Advertised on Instagram and Facebook on WhatsApp

How it looks on WhatsApp, the red flags and what to do.

WhatsApp scams arrive from numbers you do not know, from a friend whose account was taken over, or from a group you were added to without asking. Fake Online Store Advertised on Instagram and Facebook is one of the ways this shows up: A slick shop with huge discounts appears in your feed, takes your UPI or card payment and ships nothing. Learn how to spot the fake store.

What fake online store advertised on instagram and facebook looks like on WhatsApp

The set-up is cheap and fast. The scammer copies product photos from a real brand, builds a template shop with a new domain name, and writes a story such as 'closing down sale' or 'factory surplus'. Paid ads on social media push it to people who recently looked at similar items. Comments under the ad are often deleted or written by the scammer's own accounts, so every visible remark is positive.

Red flags to check on the WhatsApp message

What to do

  1. Stop before paying and search the shop name with the word 'complaints' or 'reviews'.
  2. Check the web address letter by letter and compare it with the brand's official site typed by hand.
  3. Look for a clear return policy, postal address and a working support channel.
  4. Turn on two-step verification in WhatsApp settings so a stolen SMS code is not enough.
  5. Warn the group or family, and report the number on Sanchar Saathi if it is a scam call or message.
  6. Do not click links or open files. Do not send money or codes.

Inside WhatsApp use Block and report; for numbers that call or text you, the Sanchar Saathi portal (Chakshu facility) also takes complaints.

If money or a code is already gone

  1. Call the helpline 1930 and report at cybercrime.gov.in as soon as possible so the bank can try to hold the money.
  2. Tell your bank through its official app or the number on your card, and ask them to block the card if you typed its details.
  3. Save screenshots of the ad, the website, the payment receipt and the chat.
  4. Change passwords for any account that shares the password you used on the site.

National Cyber Crime Helpline: 1930; report at cybercrime.gov.in.

Paste the shop's link into Link check in Safeavio Sentinel before you open it. It looks for lookalike domains, shortened links and risky patterns and tells you the reasons in plain words. Money Shield gives you a short 'Verify before you pay' checklist so a countdown timer does not rush you. These checks help you spot warning signs, but they cannot confirm that a seller is honest or get money back once it is sent.

Check it before you tap or pay

Safeavio Sentinel is a made-in-India Android app: paste a message or link, or scan a QR code, and get a plain verdict with the reasons. It helps you spot a scam; it does not promise to stop every one.
