Fake Online Store Advertised on Instagram and Facebook by SMS
How it looks by SMS, the red flags and what to do.
On SMS the scammer has only a few lines to work with, so they use a deadline, a threat or a prize and a link that must be tapped "now". Fake Online Store Advertised on Instagram and Facebook is one of the ways this shows up: A slick shop with huge discounts appears in your feed, takes your UPI or card payment and ships nothing. Learn how to spot the fake store.
What fake online store advertised on instagram and facebook looks like by SMS
- A very short message with a deadline such as "today" or "within 24 hours".
- A shortened or oddly spelled link that does not match the real website.
- A request to call a number, install an app or share an OTP.
The set-up is cheap and fast. The scammer copies product photos from a real brand, builds a template shop with a new domain name, and writes a story such as 'closing down sale' or 'factory surplus'. Paid ads on social media push it to people who recently looked at similar items. Comments under the ad are often deleted or written by the scammer's own accounts, so every visible remark is positive.
Red flags to check on the text message
- The price is far below what the brand charges anywhere else.
- The site has no postal address, no business registration details and a very new look.
- Only UPI to a personal-looking account or bank transfer is accepted.
- A countdown timer and a 'few pieces left' banner keep resetting.
- The link domain is not the one you type yourself for that organisation.
- The message asks for an OTP, PIN, card number or password.
What to do
- Stop before paying and search the shop name with the word 'complaints' or 'reviews'.
- Check the web address letter by letter and compare it with the brand's official site typed by hand.
- Look for a clear return policy, postal address and a working support channel.
- Open the official app or type the official website yourself to see if there is any real notice.
- Paste the text into a scam checker (Safeavio Sentinel can check it) before you do anything else.
- Report the sender on the Sanchar Saathi portal (Chakshu facility) and block the number.

- Call the helpline 1930 and report at cybercrime.gov.in as soon as possible so the bank can try to hold the money.
- Tell your bank through its official app or the number on your card, and ask them to block the card if you typed its details.
- Save screenshots of the ad, the website, the payment receipt and the chat.
- Change passwords for any account that shares the password you used on the site.

Paste the shop's link into Link check in Safeavio Sentinel before you open it. It looks for lookalike domains, shortened links and risky patterns and tells you the reasons in plain words. Money Shield gives you a short 'Verify before you pay' checklist so a countdown timer does not rush you. These checks help you spot warning signs, but they cannot confirm that a seller is honest or get money back once it is sent.
Check it before you tap or pay
Safeavio Sentinel is a made-in-India Android app: paste a message or link, or scan a QR code, and get a plain verdict with the reasons. It helps you spot a scam; it does not promise to stop every one.
