WhatsApp wrong number scam
WhatsApp wrong number scam starts with a stranger's friendly "Hi, is this Rahul?" and slowly leads to money, investment or romance fraud.
WhatsApp wrong number scam: The wrong number scam begins with an unknown person writing a casual message as if to someone else. When you reply politely, they keep chatting, build a friendship and later introduce an investment, job, gift or emergency that needs your money.
The opening is harmless: "Hi, is this Priya? We met at the event." You reply that it is a wrong number, and they apologise warmly. Over days they share photos, talk about family or business and ask about your life. The profile photo may be of a good-looking stranger. The point is to turn you from a stranger into a friend.
Later comes the ask: a trading tip, a gift parcel stuck at customs, a medical bill or a loan. Because you trust them, you pay. Do not continue the chat. Block and report the contact in WhatsApp. If you want a second view of a later message, paste it into the Safeavio scam check to see which warning signs it shows.
Tips
- Do not reply to unknown numbers beyond saying nothing; block and report them.
- Never move money for someone you have only met on chat.
- Be cautious when a stranger turns friendly and then suggests an investment.
