Sideloading
Sideloading means installing an Android app from a file, not from the Play Store, which skips store checks and is a common route for malware.
Sideloading: Sideloading is installing an app on your phone from an APK file or a website instead of from the official app store. It skips the store's review. Some safe apps are shared this way, but most mobile malware in India reaches phones through sideloaded files.
Typical sideloaded files arrive on WhatsApp or Telegram with names such as RTO challan, PM Kisan, bank reward or a wedding card. Android asks you to allow installs from this source. People tap yes to see the invitation, and in doing so give the file a chance to read SMS and watch their screen. Some phones also warn that the file is unsafe; do not ignore that warning.
Sideloading is not always wrong, as a company may offer a direct download of its own app. Do it only from a website you typed yourself, check the maker, and turn the install-unknown-apps right off again afterwards. Never sideload an app that comes from a message, even one sent by a friend. This one habit prevents many of the Android frauds seen in India.
Tips
- Never install an APK sent in WhatsApp, Telegram or SMS, whoever sent it.
- If you must sideload from a company you trust, type its website address yourself.
- Turn off Install unknown apps for your browser and chat apps when you finish.
