Sextortion

Sextortion is blackmail using real or fake intimate photos or video calls, with threats to share them unless you pay. Do not pay.

Sextortion: Sextortion is a crime where someone threatens to share your intimate pictures or recorded video-call clips with your contacts unless you pay. The images may be real, or faked. The first demand is usually followed by more demands. Do not pay; reach out for support.

A common pattern is a friendly stranger starting a video call that turns intimate. The call is recorded, or a screenshot is taken. Soon a message arrives with a list of your contacts or social media friends and a threat: pay Rs 10,000 or we send the video. Some scammers claim to be police and add a fake case. Fear and shame are what the blackmailer depends on, so reaching out early weakens their hold.

Do not pay and do not panic; paying usually leads to more demands. Stop talking to them, take screenshots of the threats, and block the number. Tighten your social media privacy so your friend list is hidden. Report on cybercrime.gov.in and call 1930 if money was sent. Remember, you are the victim, not the one at fault. Talk to a trusted friend or family member; you do not have to handle it alone.
