Screen lock
A screen lock is the PIN, pattern, password or biometric that protects a phone when it is idle, and it is the first defence against a thief.
Screen lock: A screen lock is the method that stops others from opening your phone, such as a PIN, pattern, password, fingerprint or face. It also protects the encryption of your data. A phone with no lock, or one with an easy lock, opens its whole life to anyone who holds it.
Many Indian users pick 1234, a birth year or a simple pattern, or skip the lock altogether. A thief or a curious friend then sees UPI apps, chats, photos and email in seconds. Patterns leave finger marks and are easy to watch over a shoulder, so a long PIN or a password is better. A phone with a weak lock also weakens apps that rely on it, such as passkeys and payment approvals.
Pick a six digit PIN or longer that is not a date or a repeat. Set the phone to lock after a short time. Hide notification contents on the lock screen so OTPs are not visible. Do not tell the PIN to anyone, and change it if someone saw it. The few seconds spent on a stronger lock are cheap.
Tips
- Use a six digit PIN or longer, and avoid birth years, repeated digits and simple patterns.
- Set the phone to lock automatically after 30 seconds or one minute.
- Hide sensitive notifications on the lock screen so OTPs are not shown.
