Ransomware
Ransomware is malware that locks your files or device and demands money to unlock them, often with a countdown to add pressure.
Ransomware: Ransomware is malicious software that encrypts your files or locks your screen, then demands a payment, usually in cryptocurrency, to give access back. It shows a message with a deadline. Paying does not guarantee you will get your files, and it encourages the criminals.
Ransomware reaches computers through email attachments, pirated software, fake invoices and unpatched systems. Small Indian shops, clinics, schools and offices are often hit because they keep important data on one computer without a backup. On phones, it may lock the screen with a fake police or court warning. Attackers also threaten to publish stolen data, so cleaning up and getting advice early matters.
The best protection is a recent backup kept apart from the computer, such as on an external drive or a trusted cloud. With a good backup you can wipe the device and restore. Do not pay quickly, disconnect from the network, and report the incident at cybercrime.gov.in. Even a simple monthly copy of photos and documents gives you a way out.
Tips
- Keep a recent backup on a drive or cloud that is not always connected to your computer.
- Do not open invoices, resumes or zip files from unknown senders.
- If hit, disconnect from Wi-Fi, do not pay in a hurry and report at cybercrime.gov.in.
