E-mandate
E-mandate is an online standing instruction that lets a company debit your card or bank account on a schedule for bills and subscriptions.
E-mandate: An e-mandate is a digital permission you give once so a company can charge your card or bank account regularly, for a fixed or capped amount. It is used for subscriptions, loan EMIs, insurance and mutual fund instalments, and it can be cancelled.
You agree to an e-mandate on a payment page, often with an OTP from your bank. For card payments, banks send an advance notice before each debit above a small amount, and you can usually say no. The mandate details are visible in your bank or card app, along with the next debit date. Many of these are legitimate and convenient, but only when you remember them.
The risk is forgetting. Free-trial offers, magazine plans, gaming passes and unknown apps can keep charging for months. Fraudulent pages also ask for mandate approval as a verification step. Make it a habit to check the list of mandates each month, cancel what you do not use, and stop paying anyone who will not let you cancel. A monthly check takes five minutes and can save real money.
Tips
- Check your active mandates every month in the bank or card app and cancel unused ones.
- Do not start a free trial that needs your card unless you note the cancel date.
- Read the maximum amount shown before approving.
