Fake Jio calls and apps

Callers using Jio's name for illegal-use threats, remote upgrade apps and tower rent offers. Learn the script and how to verify.

Jio is an Indian mobile network and broadband provider from Reliance, with prepaid and postpaid plans, JioFiber and the MyJio app. Because many people use it, scammers pretend to be Jio on phone calls, in apps and on WhatsApp. This page lists the lies they usually tell and how to check before you act.

Lines used in fake Jio calls and apps

Caller says your Jio number is being used for illegal activity and will be disconnected
Fake executive asks you to install a quick-support app to upgrade to 5G
Caller offers a tower installation on your terrace for a monthly rent and an advance fee
WhatsApp message promises free recharge for sharing a link in groups

How to verify it yourself

Open the MyJio app and look at your plan, validity, bills and any KYC status. If the SIM really needed action, the app or a Jio store would show it. Type the official website by hand instead of tapping a link. Jio does not require you to install remote-support apps for a 5G upgrade, and tower rent offers that ask for money first are a pretext. For anything urgent, use the care number printed on your bill or in the app.

Quick checklist

Do not tap links or call numbers inside the message.
Open the official app, or type the official website yourself, and look for the same notice.
Never share an OTP, PIN, CVV or password with anyone, including "staff".
If money moved, call 1930 and your bank at once.

A caller says they are from Jio. Is it real?

Treat it as unverified. Hang up and contact Jio through its official app or the number printed on your card, bill or official website. Never install an app or share an OTP because a caller asked.

Can Jio ask me to install an app on a call?

Be very careful. Scammers use screen-sharing and fake apps to watch your screen and read OTPs. Install apps only from the official store listing that you find yourself, never from a link or a caller.
