Safe Account Transfer Fraud Alert Scam

A caller says your account is under attack and asks you to move your savings to a 'safe account' immediately. The account belongs to the scammer.

The caller says they are from the bank's fraud team and that hackers are using your account right now. To protect your savings, they say, you must move all the money to a temporary safe account within minutes. The fear is real and the instructions sound protective. But no bank asks you to move money to another account to keep it safe. The account belongs to the scammer.

How the scam works

The scammer begins by reading out a few details about you, such as your name, a bank name or the last digits of a card, to prove they know you. Then they describe a fake attack: a login from another country, a loan being applied for, or a large transfer in progress. They sound hurried and a little frightened, so that you feel you are in a race against the hackers.

They tell you not to use the bank app, not to tell anyone and not to hang up, claiming the hackers can see your phone and that the line is secure. They give an account number, a UPI ID or a QR code for the 'safe account' or 'RBI account', and ask you to send everything. They may also ask you to take a loan or break a fixed deposit first so that more can be moved.

The transfer goes to an account controlled by the scammer, and the money is passed on to other accounts within minutes. When the call ends, they say a 'refund' will follow, then stop answering. Because you made the transfer yourself, the bank sees an authorised payment. The scammer relies on panic, secrecy and the lack of a quiet minute in which you could call the bank.

An example of what you may see

Example only: 'Madam, I am from the bank fraud prevention unit. There is an active hacking attempt on your account and Rs 4 lakh is about to be transferred out. To protect your savings, transfer your balance to the RBI safe account I will give you right now. Do not tell anyone, do not open your bank app and do not cut this call, or the hackers will see everything on your phone.'

This example is written for illustration. Real messages change their wording, names and links all the time.

If you already paid or shared a code

  1. Call 1930 immediately and give the receiver account details and amount.
  2. Call your bank on the number on your card and ask them to flag the transfer.

Questions people ask

Does any bank have a safe account to move money to?

No. Banks do not ask you to send your own money to another account for safety. Your money is safest where it is. A caller who gives you an account to send money to is trying to take it.

Why does the caller say not to tell anyone?

Secrecy stops you from asking a relative, a friend or your branch, any of whom would spot the scam. Treat any request to keep a money matter secret as a strong sign of fraud. Ask someone first.

What can I do in the first few minutes after sending money?

Call 1930 and your bank using the number on your card right away, and give the receiver's details. Speed helps the bank try to freeze the money before it moves further. Then report on the cyber crime portal.
