Missed Call Callback Scam by SMS

How it looks by SMS, the red flags and what to do.

A text message is the cheapest way for a scammer to reach thousands of phones at once, and the sender name can look like a bank, a courier or a government office. Missed Call Callback Scam is one of the ways this shows up: A missed call from an unusual number tempts you to call back and pay high charges, or leads to a scam pitch. What missed call callback scam looks like by SMS

• A sender name that resembles a bank, courier, tax or utility, or an ordinary mobile number.
• A very short message with a deadline such as "today" or "within 24 hours".
• A shortened or oddly spelled link that does not match the real website.

The scammer uses software to dial thousands of numbers and hang up after one ring. They do not want you to answer. They want you to see a missed call and call back. Numbers are chosen to look like they belong to a hospital, a courier or a relative abroad, so the missed call feels important rather than random.

Red flags to check on the text message

• The phone rings once and stops.
• The number is long, foreign or unfamiliar.
• You get several one ring calls in a row.
• A callback leads to music or a long silence.
• It tells you to install an app from a link instead of the official store.
• The link domain is not the one you type yourself for that organisation.

What to do

1. Do not call back unknown or foreign numbers.
2. If it matters, send a text or use a messaging app to ask who called.
3. Block the number in your phone's call settings.
4. Do not reply, do not tap the link and do not call the number in the message.
5. Open the official app or type the official website yourself to see if there is any real notice.
6. Paste the text into a scam checker (Safeavio Sentinel can check it) before you do anything else.

You can report suspicious SMS and calls on the Sanchar Saathi portal (Chakshu facility) of the Department of Telecommunications.

If money or a code is already gone

1. Contact your operator through its official app about unexpected charges on your bill.
2. If you shared bank or card details, call 1930 and your bank through the number on your card.
3. Block the number and keep a record of the call times.
4. File a complaint on cybercrime.gov.in if a scam pitch followed.
