Matrimonial Site NRI Match Sending a Gift Parcel

A matrimonial match abroad promises a gift or marriage, then asks for customs fees or a transfer. Learn how matrimony fraud works.

On a matrimonial site, a polished profile of a doctor or engineer abroad shows interest in you. Conversations move to WhatsApp, and in a few weeks he promises marriage and says he has sent you a gift parcel with jewellery, a phone and foreign currency. A call from 'customs' then says you must pay a clearance fee. The profile, the gift and the customs officer are all part of one scripted fraud.

How the scam works

The scammer builds a convincing profile using stolen photos and a believable career, such as a surgeon in London or an engineer in Canada. He shows quick interest, writes warmly and shares family stories. He is usually available only at odd hours, which fits the time difference. The pace of affection is fast, and he talks about marriage within days, which feels flattering to a person searching for a partner.

The pressure begins when the gift is announced. He sends a picture of a parcel and a courier receipt. A few days later a person who says he is a customs or airport officer calls, saying the parcel contains foreign currency or gold and needs a duty payment. The 'groom' pleads that he cannot pay from abroad and asks you to pay now, promising to repay when he arrives. Fees rise in stages.

The payoff is the sum of fees, and sometimes loans or investments suggested later. The scammer may also ask for personal photos or ID documents, which can be used for blackmail or fake accounts. When the victim refuses or runs out of money, the profile is deleted, the numbers are blocked and the 'groom' is gone, leaving embarrassment and financial loss.

An example of what you may see

Example call (invented): 'Madam, this is from the airport customs department. A parcel from your friend contains jewellery and foreign currency worth a large amount. A clearance fee of Rs 38,000 must be paid today, otherwise it will be seized and you may face legal action. Please transfer to this account and send me the receipt.' Earlier in chat the 'groom' wrote, 'Darling, I sent you my mother's gold set for our wedding. Please help clear it, I will repay.'

This example is written for illustration. Real messages change their wording, names and links all the time.

Questions people ask

Why do customs officers appear in these scams?

The customs story gives a reason to ask for money while the 'groom' is far away. Real duties are handled through official channels, not through payments to personal accounts after a chat. A genuine parcel is cleared through the courier's own tracking, and not through a call that demands money into a personal account.

How can I check an overseas profile?

Ask for a live video call, reverse search the photos, check the person's claimed workplace through official channels and involve your family early. Avoid money talk until you have met in person. It also helps to speak to the match with your family on the call, as scammers often avoid this.

Is it wrong to feel embarrassed?

No. These scams are built by professionals who target hopes. Reporting helps others, and you are not alone in being targeted. If you feel ashamed, remember that skilled scripts are used on many people and that talking about it protects others.
