Insurance Policy Revival and Claim Call Scam on WhatsApp
How it looks on WhatsApp, the red flags and what to do.
WhatsApp is private and fast, which scammers like: a "wrong number" chat can turn into a task, an investment tip or a payment request within minutes. Insurance Policy Revival and Claim Call Scam is one of the ways this shows up: A caller says your old insurance policy has a bonus or can be revived, then asks for fees or an OTP. See how policyholders are targeted.
What insurance policy revival and claim call scam looks like on WhatsApp
- A group invite promising returns, jobs or prizes.
- A PDF, APK or image that must be opened to "see the details".
- A link that pretends to be a wa.me, courier or bank page.
The scammer works from lists of people who bought policies, taken from leaks or from dishonest agents. He calls with the right name and sometimes the policy year, and says an 'insurance regulator desk' or 'policy settlement team' is handling a release of dormant funds. He explains that the money can only be released after a clearance fee and a tax payment.
Red flags to check on the WhatsApp message
- A bonus or maturity payout that needs a fee to be released.
- A caller who knows your name but cannot be checked on your policy papers.
- Fees described as the last step several times.
- An OTP or UPI payment requested for 'verification'.
- You are added to a group full of people praising profits.
- The sender moves you quickly to Telegram or to a second app.
What to do
- Do not pay or share an OTP. Find your policy papers and the insurer's contact printed on them.
- Log in to the insurer's official app or website typed by hand to check the policy status.
- Call the insurer only on the number from your policy document or its official app.
- Do not click links or open files. Do not send money or codes.
- Open the chat, tap the contact name and choose Block and report.
- If it was a "friend", call them on the number you already have and ask.
Inside WhatsApp use Block and report; for numbers that call or text you, the Sanchar Saathi portal (Chakshu facility) also takes complaints.
If money or a code is already gone
- Call 1930 and report at cybercrime.gov.in with each payment and the caller's number.
- Tell your bank on the number printed on your card and ask about holding the transfers.
- Inform the insurer through its official contact about the fake caller.
- Keep letters, screenshots and call logs for the police.
National Cyber Crime Helpline: 1930; report at cybercrime.gov.in.
Safeavio's scam check reads the message or letter text you paste and marks the fee-before-payout pattern and the OTP request, and Money Shield offers a 'verify before you pay' checklist and a family code word to confirm money requests at home. It cannot see the insurer's records or hear a call, so the policy status must be checked in the insurer's own app.
