Red flags to check on the WhatsApp message

What to do

  1. Ask for a written scheme document with the terms and the business details.
  2. Check whether the operator is registered and what rules apply to such deposits.
  3. Pay only to the business account named in the document and keep each receipt.
  4. If it was a "friend", call them on the number you already have and ask.
  5. Turn on two-step verification in WhatsApp settings so a stolen SMS code is not enough.
  6. Warn the group or family, and report the number on Sanchar Saathi if it is a scam call or message.

Inside WhatsApp use Block and report; for numbers that call or text you, the Sanchar Saathi portal (Chakshu facility) also takes complaints.

If money or a code is already gone

  1. Collect all receipts and passbook entries and note the dates and amounts.
  2. Report to 1930 and cybercrime.gov.in if payments were made online, and tell your bank.
  3. File a written complaint at the police station with other members.
  4. Do not pay any 'recovery agent' who offers to retrieve the money for a fee.

National Cyber Crime Helpline: 1930; report at cybercrime.gov.in.

Safeavio's scam check can read a scheme message you paste and highlight the guaranteed bonus and the pressure to pay early, and Money Shield offers a verify-before-you-pay checklist you can share with family. It cannot check whether a shop is licensed or solvent, or recover money, so proper written terms and registered status matter more than any app. Ask a trusted adviser too.
