Fixed Deposit Premature Closure Scam
A caller says your fixed deposit has matured or can earn extra interest if you act now, and asks for an OTP, link or remote access.
People who hold fixed deposits, especially senior citizens, receive calls and messages about a maturing FD, a special rate or a premature closure. The caller sounds knowledgeable and offers a bonus, then needs an OTP or login to 'process' it. A bank never needs your OTP to renew or close a deposit through a caller, and real renewals can be done at the branch or in the official app.
How the scam works
The scammer finds people through leaked customer lists or by guessing that older account holders have deposits. They call as a bank's investment desk, mention FDs in a general way and say that a rate change or a maturity date means you must act this week. They may refer to 'your FD' without a number so that you fill in the details yourself.
To 'renew at the higher rate', they ask for your account number, date of birth and an OTP, or they send a link to a page that looks like the bank's FD section. Some ask you to install a support app to help you 'upload' the request. The talk is full of financial terms, which makes it sound professional and difficult to question.
The OTP or the login lets them break the deposit or use the account's balance, then send the money out to other accounts. Because FDs are often large, the loss can be big. They may also use the same call to set up a new payee or change your contact details so that you do not receive alerts while they finish the transfers.
An example of what you may see
Example only: 'Sir, this is the deposit desk. Your fixed deposit matures this week and we can renew it at a special rate of 9 percent only if confirmed today. Please share your account number and the OTP that you will receive. If you miss this, the deposit will move to the lower savings rate and you will lose interest. I can also help you by sending a link for an online renewal.'
This example is written for illustration. Real messages change their wording, names and links all the time.

Questions people ask
Does the bank need an OTP to renew my FD?
No call should require you to read out an OTP to renew or close a deposit. You can renew at the branch or inside the official app. Anyone asking for an OTP over the phone is asking to approve something on your account.
How can I check if my FD is maturing?
Look at your deposit receipt, the bank's official app or ask at your branch. Use the number printed on your passbook if you call. Do not use a number or link given by an incoming caller.
Why are older people targeted for FD scams?
Older people often hold deposits and may be less used to online banking, so scammers expect less checking. Families can help by agreeing a rule that no deposit decision is made on a call without talking to a relative.
