Fake Phone Cleaner, Booster and Antivirus Apps
Cleaner, booster and 'virus removal' apps promise speed but fill your phone with ads or ask for powerful permissions. Learn what to avoid.
Your phone feels slow and an ad says it is full of junk, with a green button to 'Clean now'. A search for a booster app shows many with bright icons and thousands of reviews. Most phones already manage memory by themselves, and these apps often do little beyond showing a scan animation. Some add intrusive ads, charge a hidden subscription or ask for permissions that let them read your messages and notifications.
How the scam works
The set-up is a store listing or an outside link for an app with a promise of faster speed, longer battery life or protection from viruses. The listing uses glowing reviews and screenshots of a scan. Once installed, the app shows a fake scan with large numbers of 'issues' that increase each time you open it. A button says 'Fix all', which leads to a paid upgrade or a request for more permissions.
The pressure is a feeling that the phone is at risk. Pop-ups warn about heat, viruses or battery damage, and the app may send frequent notifications. To 'optimise', it asks for access to notifications, accessibility or display over other apps. Free trials convert into weekly charges if you do not cancel, sometimes through the phone bill. Some versions are clones of popular tools with changed names and hidden advertising code.
The payoff is revenue from ads and subscriptions, and in worse cases data collection or fake overlays on banking apps. Your phone might actually become slower because of the app's own activity and ads. Removing it can be hard if the app has device admin rights. Others use the cleaner as a base to download further software later, which means the first installed app is just the door.
An example of what you may see
Example in-app screens (invented): 'Scanning... 38 threats found! Your battery is at risk. Tap CLEAN NOW.' After you tap, a screen says 'Unlock full protection with Premium, Rs 499 a week, free for 3 days', and another asks, 'Allow access to notifications and display over other apps to keep your phone protected.' Soon your lock screen shows adverts even when the app is closed. The app's icon is a shield with a lightning bolt and shows 12,000 reviews with similar wording.
This example is written for illustration. Real messages change their wording, names and links all the time.
Red flags
- An app finds dozens of threats at the first scan and urges you to pay.
- It asks for accessibility, notification or display-over-other-apps permissions.
- Ads appear on your lock screen or outside the app.
- A free trial hides a weekly subscription.
- The app has a generic name and thousands of similar-sounding reviews.
- It is difficult to uninstall or asks for device admin rights.
What to do right now
- Uninstall cleaner or booster apps and use the phone's built-in storage and battery tools.
- Check your permissions list and remove special access you do not need.
- Cancel subscriptions in your store account and ask your operator to stop any bill-based charges.
- Install apps only after checking the developer's name, reviews and permissions.
- Restart the phone and update it through Settings.
If you already paid or shared a code
- If you paid for a subscription, cancel it in your store account and request a refund through the store.
- If card details were shared, call your bank on the number on your card and ask them to block it.
- Call 1930 and report at cybercrime.gov.in if money was taken without consent.
- Remove the app and change passwords if it had broad permissions.
National Cyber Crime Helpline: 1930. Report online at cybercrime.gov.in. Do it fast: the sooner your bank is told, the better the chance that money can be held.

How Safeavio helps
Phone scan in Safeavio Sentinel reviews installed apps, requested permissions and risky settings, and highlights apps that ask for more access than they need, so you can see whether a cleaner is overreaching. It also flags apps outside a store and apps that look like copies of other apps. Safeavio does not speed up your phone and does not remove software by magic; it tells you what looks wrong and how to fix it.
Check it before you tap or pay
