Wedding Invitation APK Shared on WhatsApp on WhatsApp
How it looks on WhatsApp, the red flags and what to do.
WhatsApp scams arrive from numbers you do not know, from a friend whose account was taken over, or from a group you were added to without asking. Wedding Invitation APK Shared on WhatsApp is one of the ways this shows up: A WhatsApp message with a file named like a wedding card ends in .apk. Installing it can give a scammer control of your SMS and bank apps.
What wedding invitation apk shared on whatsapp looks like on WhatsApp
- A PDF, APK or image that must be opened to "see the details".
- A link that pretends to be a wa.me, courier or bank page.
- A message from an unknown number, often with a stock photo of a smiling person.
The scammer first controls an account or uses a number that resembles a contact. He sends a file to many people at once during wedding season, when invitations are common. The file name suggests a card, a photo album or a video. Because the phone does not open it like a picture, the viewer is asked to allow installation from this source, which is a setting people may accept without reading.
Red flags to check on the WhatsApp message
- A wedding or festival invitation arrives as an app file ending in .apk.
- The sender is a contact, but the message is generic and has no personal detail.
- Your phone asks to allow installs from this source.
- The app asks for SMS, notification or display-over-apps permission.
- A file ending in .apk arrives; never install it.
- Someone asks for the six-digit code WhatsApp sent you by SMS.
What to do
- Do not open or install the file; delete it and tell the sender through another channel.
- Never allow installation from unknown sources for chat apps or browsers.
- If you installed it, switch on airplane mode and uninstall the app from the app list and device admin settings.
- Open the chat, tap the contact name and choose Block and report.
- If it was a "friend", call them on the number you already have and ask.
- Turn on two-step verification in WhatsApp settings so a stolen SMS code is not enough.
Inside WhatsApp use Block and report; for numbers that call or text you, the Sanchar Saathi portal (Chakshu facility) also takes complaints.
