ESIC and PF Claim Agent Scam

An agent offers to speed up your PF or ESIC claim for a commission and asks for your UAN login or OTP. See how workers lose savings and documents.

Workers who have left a job often struggle with a pending provident fund or ESIC claim. An agent on social media or in a local office offers to 'settle it in 3 days' for a share of the money. He asks for the UAN login, an OTP and Aadhaar details. The claim may be filed with his own bank account, and the worker's savings go to a stranger instead of into their own account.

How the scam works

The agent targets people who have recently changed jobs or whose claim has been rejected. He posts about 'quick PF settlement' in worker groups and local advertisements. He sounds knowledgeable about forms and rejection reasons, and gives a plausible explanation for the delay, such as a mismatch in name or a 'pending KYC' that only he can fix.

He asks for the UAN and password, the registered mobile OTP and a copy of the Aadhaar and the cheque. He may say he will 'update' the mobile number to his own. The pressure is time: a claim that is not filed in a week will be rejected again. He also asks for part of the amount in advance as a 'service fee', which is smaller than the claim, so the worker agrees.

The payoff is access to the member account. By changing the registered phone number or bank details, he can file the claim to an account of his choice or sell the details onward. The worker discovers the loss when the status shows 'paid' but nothing arrives. Recovery is hard because the worker voluntarily handed over the OTP.

An example of what you may see

Example call (invented): 'Bhai, aapka PF claim reject hua hai, main 3 din mein pass karwa dunga. Bas apna UAN password aur OTP bhej do, aur Rs 2,000 advance. Baaki 10 percent commission paisa aane ke baad. Aaj hi file nahi hui to claim dobara reject ho jayega.' He sends a screenshot of a 'settled' claim from another person's account as proof, and asks you to hurry. He adds that his 'senior in the office' will push the file through only if the details reach him before evening.

This example is written for illustration. Real messages change their wording, names and links all the time.

How Safeavio helps

Safeavio's scam check can read an agent's message and mark the commission, the password and OTP request and the deadline, and Money Shield's checklist and family code word help you pause before a payment. The link check can warn about a lookalike claim portal. It cannot see your account or file a claim for you, so the official member portal remains the only place to do that.

Questions people ask

Do I need an agent to file a PF or ESIC claim?

No. The official portal lets members file claims themselves, and the employer or the local office can help with errors. An agent is not required, and sharing a password or OTP with one is risky.

What if my claim has been rejected?

Read the reason on the portal, correct the mismatch such as a name or date, and refile or raise a grievance on the official site. A local office visit can also help. If the reason is unclear, visit the nearest office with your documents, because staff can explain the problem without any fee.

Why does an agent want my mobile number changed?

OTPs go to the registered number. If it is his, he can approve changes and withdrawals without you. Never allow your number or bank details to be replaced by a third party. Even a helpful agent should never hold your OTP.
