Disaster and Charity Donation QR Scam on WhatsApp
How it looks on WhatsApp, the red flags and what to do.
WhatsApp scams arrive from numbers you do not know, from a friend whose account was taken over, or from a group you were added to without asking. Disaster and Charity Donation QR Scam is one of the ways this shows up: After a flood, accident or illness story goes viral, fake appeals share a personal QR. Learn how to give safely and how to spot a fake relief fund.
What disaster and charity donation qr scam looks like on WhatsApp
- A PDF, APK or image that must be opened to "see the details".
- A link that pretends to be a wa.me, courier or bank page.
- A message from an unknown number, often with a stock photo of a smiling person.
Scammers watch the news and prepare a post with a moving photo, usually taken from another event, and a short caption with a QR code. They set up accounts that look like charities, with a logo copied from a real group. The caption says that funds are needed today for food, treatment or rescue, and shows a number of donors already helped.
Red flags to check on the WhatsApp message
- A QR that leads to a personal name, not a registered organisation.
- A photo with no place, date or named organiser.
- Pressure to forward the post to many groups.
- A promise of a tax receipt from an unknown volunteer.
- A file ending in .apk arrives; never install it.
- Someone asks for the six-digit code WhatsApp sent you by SMS.
What to do
- Give through a registered organisation or the official government relief fund, typed by hand.
- Check the receiver's name shown in the UPI app before paying.
- Search for the organiser's own website and compare the payment details.
- If it was a "friend", call them on the number you already have and ask.
- Turn on two-step verification in WhatsApp settings so a stolen SMS code is not enough.
- Warn the group or family, and report the number on Sanchar Saathi if it is a scam call or message.
Inside WhatsApp use Block and report; for numbers that call or text you, the Sanchar Saathi portal (Chakshu facility) also takes complaints.

Safeavio's QR check shows where a QR code goes before you pay and warns about odd destinations, and the scam check on a pasted appeal can point out the pressure to forward and the vague details. Money Shield's checklist reminds you to confirm the receiver's name. It cannot judge whether a cause is deserving, so give only to organisations you can verify.
